Sounds good enough for a musclecar-Mopar to me!
No H or X pipe in the exhaust?

I still hope my Chrysler will be quieter though.

I have a H pipe in the system, but an X pipe may be quieter at idle.

I put a 3 inch summit system on my old 69 coronet. It had a 499 in it and it was very loud.So i tired to switch the mufflers to some turbo mufflers,it was still loud. Then i put an h pipe on it and some edelbrock mufflers(23 inch long ones)and it was very quiet.Almost too quiet. When i sold the car i put a mild 440 in it and you almost couldnt even hear it running, lol

For an upcoming project car of mine, I'm trying to build a pretty quiet 3" diameter full exhaust system.
I'll be using a Summit 3" headerback system (SUM-680141-NM), accompanied by an X-pipe, a pair of Dynomax 23" long Super Turbo mufflers (17769) and a pair of Dynomax 3" Race bullets (24215) acting as resonators in the back next to the fuel tank.

Is anyone running such a similar exhaust system perhaps and what are your findings/ideas?

exhaust on my 5th ave is a big single using a 17769 and a summit 3" glasspack as a resonator. very reasonable volume level...having 2 of each should be nice and quiet. heavy, though.

To more fully quiet your system
consider either the Dynomax
17299 (SS more expensive)
or
21313
muffler listed here:

http://www.a-1performance.com/rv/

The back pressure of either of these "straight through" mufflers is probably the same or better than the
Dynomax 23" long Super Turbo mufflers (17769)

The little horizontal stubs
are "tuned" by trimming their lengths.

What length do you intend to start out at?

The 'Tone Generator' program at this link
can be used to match up the exhaust system 'resonance' at some particular cruise rpm that you want to eliminate to the approximate length of the stub:

http://www.nchsoftware.com/download/index.html

The math and science of the stubs is covered at the link below under the
B. High Pass Filters
section
midway down the webpage:

BBM,
It is very possible to make a darn quiet system. We did it and you can too.

You can use a good X-pipe system and 5" by 11" by 22", 3" offset in and center out Goerlich XLERATORs and get it really quiet as compared to most large engined, large pipe-equipped cars.

You can also grab a copy of Dad's book at any bookstore "How to Build a Max Performance Pontiac V8" and look at all our charts and graphs.

http://www.amazon.com/How-Build-Performa...9829&sr=8-1

I can email you my charts and you can take a look at our relative sound numbers and watch and listen to a couple of these videos. Based on its 117.5 mph speed (a month ago) and the 4100 pound weight plus its huge frontal area, the numbers show that the engine in the car makes about 550 HP at the flywheel and it is very, very quiet at the track and on the street.

i almost have the exact system (only it's 2.5") & really like it. thorley headers, x-pipe, & dynomax super turbos. used to have flowmaster knockoffs & it would drone like crazy. i think you'll appreciate it...can't beat the price.

My system was forced to use 2 fiberglass packed large volume mufflers, in a series. Two muffler inline will further quiet the noise. H and X pipes make a distinct ticking noise as the rouge pulse equalizes across the tubes.

Where are the Aluminum driveshafts to go along with the aluminum exhaust pipes?

Thanks for the shared info and links folks.
One thing I think that could make the exhaust fairly docile at low rpms might the fact that the compression is low in this motor. Or maybe I'm just wishfull thinking...

I have often heard that X pipe and H pipe connections reduce sound, and thought:
"I wonder why that is?"

After following this thread,
it suddenly occurred to me that
... an X pipe is actually
two 'high pass filter' stubs side by side, and
... an H pipe is a single 'high pass filter' stub that is
'as long as it can be' because its length is extended on out through the other side of the vehicle exhaust pipe all the way to the rear tip on the opposite side.

I have 3" exhaust, off manifolds, with Dynomax Ultraflows, H-pipe, on a 500hp hemi. It's pretty dang loud. I have people tell me they know I'm coming and can hear me for about a mile! What would be the easiest way to tone it down a tad? Resonators out back? Suggestions?

Why even bother with 3" exhaust off manifolds? You've already choked it down to 2-1/4" with the logs.

Maybe not the best way- but it fits! I had a hard time spending huge bucks on headers- then having to take a hammer to them.

stock 68 383 rr with 2.5" X pipe, dynomax super hemi turbos through the hp exh manifolds. it was somewhat quiet but had a bad resonance between 2 and 4K, 35 to 45 mph, i had to add resonators just before the tips like the hemi RR had, they are magnaflos 22" or so long, very quiet now, when i open it up it sounds like the blues mobile jumping over the opening bridge!!

I like mine loud, but was thinking about ditching the flowmasters. Any suggestions?

Electric exhaust cutouts with a quiet muffler. Best of both worlds. http://www.dougsheaders.com/prod/new/details.aspx?ID=137

super turbos under the back seat. ( the smallest that had a 3" ALL the way through the can) and a set of Ultra Flows back by the tank. This is a TTI headers into a 3.5" x 3" Dr Gas x pipe

Perfect example, it's all about the combo. You can make any system quiet. My old DartSport ran 9.90's in the 1/4 through a 3.5" X-pipe with Magnaflow's and turnouts. If it had tailpipes it would be stealthy. My Dart has about a foot of pipe and then 3.5" Pypes stainless mufflers and it is pretty loud. An X-pipe and more pipe would make it perfect.

I have headers, cutouts and a 2.25" compression bent exhaust with flo-pro mufflers with the el cheapo summit headers. With the cutouts capped it's a bit louder than stock and makes for a nice driving car that puts some sound out when on the street but quiet enough that I can have a conversation, listen to the radio and cruise in comfort. Debating whether to try and do a quiet, well flowing 3" system or just to add the electric flappers to the cutouts.

Just for reference, here is a short clip of my wife's 70 Barracuda idling.

Video Clip 1

3" TTI X-pipe exhaust with Dynomax 17793 mufflers. These are the standard mufflers that come with the TTI kit. We've run Flowmasters on everything the last 20 years, so I wanted to do something different on this car.

Here's another clip...this time backing out of the garage. Too bad it was so darn windy outside.
