340, ported j's, BIG cam... consider a roller, 750 carb, that'll make it pretty good....for a 340. if you want real power tho, better make a 416. i run a 340, 10.5:1 cr, 750 mighty demon, ported air gap, eddie heads, 285HEHL cam, and its good for low 12's. is it fast enough? no, not at all. respectable yes. but i always say, that if i knew what i know now, i woulda started with a BB, or stroked the 340.

4" crank, .020 over (4.060 ring pack is fairly inexpensive), 9.5:1 CR, 340 rods, dual-plane, TQ or 750 Holley or AVS, Engle 214/224 @ .050, .470/.504 lift @ 4* advanced, MP ignition, 1 3/4 headers. Balance it. With that gear & weight, it'll pull strongly, idle nicely but with authority, and pull high-teens highway MPG. Did that build on a 406" 360 and I'd do it again. Avoid the MP stroker kit cast pistons, they're actually for Chevy rods.

Here' my 360 combo, and ymmv but here goes (340 whp / 350 wtq). 10.2:1 compression, out of the box edelbrock heads, holley 750 vs carb, air gap intake out of the box, hooker super comp 1 5/8" headers, crane hyd. retrofit roller cam 112 lsa, 108 installed, 230/238 @ .050, .528/.548 lift, crane gold roller rockers.
I used to run Iron J-heads ported out before these with slightly lower compression (10.07:1) on the same short block with 1 step down cam (222/230 @ .050, .509/.528 lift) and she put 305-310 at the wheels with that combo.
Good luck!

Any chance of going with more gear? 3.55? 3.91?
If not, I'd say "go stroker" too. The big arm will help overcome that mild gearing. Small blocks need freedom to spin/rev. Big blocks are more forgiving, so make big cubes with the stroker.
Otherwise the 3.23's will limit cam, carb and port/runner volume.

Ademon, the "tiny" cam was because of the stock converter, 3.21 gear, factory AC, and I already have a few other hotrods and a race car. It sounded much bigger than the specs, had perfect driveability, pulled good vacuum, and returned good MPG. I wasn't after something peaky and if you're familiar with Engle, they're very fast ramps. Personally, for a street car, I'm not into ill-mannered cam timing or "drive-in" posers. I would also go with the minimum overbore needed to clean the cylinders up and use a "shelf" ring pack; thicker cylinder walls make more power, and are better for longevity & future freshenings, than the last .020 or .030 one can remove from the bores.

I just got my motor built by Mike Liston at MRL Performance. 71 340 block redecked and bored .30 over, 416 stroker kit 10:5 comp., Voodoo Cam 60405, Edelbrock RPM performer Heads (Re ported),Hughs roller rockers, single plane ported intake,Bigs stage 5 750 carb, made 502 HP at 5650 RPM and 507 torque ft-lb at 4308 RPM on the dyno. Chassis Dyno results will come in the spring....
I'm building about the same 416 build with a smaller cam; the Comp XE274S solid. Full Ported E-brock heads, M1 Single Plane, Silver Claw 750, Comp rollers.
Hope to make 425HP ??
