Get used to reading about LS engines and LS related engine swaps, as it is a look into the future of the rest of the hobby.

The reasons you tossed it out are the reasons I purchased it.

Welcome to the future.

I almost made a similar post after reading the Holeshot article on page 10 last night. I wish Freiburger would sell the Rumble Bee to someone who actually appreciates it. I'm sick of his constant jabs and condescending banter about his Hemi. I'm sorry he's disappointed in the numbers, and the drive ability isn't on par with todays hot rods. Either appreciate it for the 90's icon that it is, or throw a couple hair driers and some fuel injection on that [Edited by Moparts - Family Friendly Site - Keep it clean] and enjoy the damn car.

Ya, the LS engine is pretty bad ass, but that doesn't mean you should dedicate an entire magazine to the damn thing. Is the GM High Tech magazine still around? If so, this crap belongs there. If not, well maybe you found the reason?

Later,

Greg

Not to mention this month's issue of Car Craft is all about the LS engines too.

too much LS crap.....it's a reflection of the times, the LS is really the only show in town in terms of new development, so in a way this hot rod is more a reflection of the way the aftermarket is going, I would think a SEMA or PRI show would be very much another LS love fest as well.

But 15 yrs ago 90% of the content was 5.0 ford and before that is was SBC.

I'm sick of it too....and I HAVE an LS2 in my work truck!

I'm even more sick of Engine Masters....the one book that on the surface should appeal to gearheads and it has nearly ZERO technical content of any value!! Try to get any technical insight into the competitors engines....zilch! Pick head from column 'a" and cam from column 'b' and here's a list of our sponsors where you can buy them is not tech....sorry! Car Magazines are little more than thinly veiled catalogues anymore.

Bring back the old Super Stock & Drag Illustrated...at least it treated us gearheads with some intelligence.

I love me some LS engines, don't get me wrong, but the latest Hot Rod and Car Craft are literally full of them.
I probably won't be renewing my mopar muscle subscription next time around. 99% of the cars they feature are not impressive in the least and half the magazine is late model "hemi" crap.

Amen to that. I loved the old SS&DI mag. Dont need to read about any of the new stuff in a Mopar Muscle mag and I would not take Hot Rod and Car Craft if you gave them to me free. They have always been Chevy biased with to much Chevy crap in all their mags. And the last thing I want to read about is the L whatever eng.

I also agree Mopar Muscle has way to much new Hemi stuff and eng builds in every issue. Ron

The reason for all the LS hype is due to it eventually becoming the only California smog legal engine for the future of hot rodding. That is what I heard on a number of television shows. The smog legal crate engines are already being produced from a number of sources.

It is simply going to replace the 350 chev that automatically went into everything.

Too many cars, too many parts, too little coin, too little space to work in, too little time left to make it all happen! Update: down to one ride, still too many parts, a little more jingle in the pocket, gaining space, and it's going to happen this year!

Yep, the latest Car Craft has just such a feature. While it's a very nice car it isn't anything significantly unique to many of the early B-bodies you'll see at the track. Boring. The stroker combo's have been out for many years now, lots of aftermarket heads to choose from, it's time to feature something different.

i love reading about the new stuff! time marches on, and the mags can't stick with the old stuff forever. i find it fascinating that these new engines are so optimized, and yet you huff 'em a little and make four digit hp reliably. i think the old engines are covered pretty well overall. like the old chev "w" build a while back. cool stuff. it's fun to watch engines evolve.

for what is the good life if not doing things thoughtfully?

Pretty much all magazines now are. I bow hunt, turkey hunt and crappie fish, all of the magazines that I once subscribed to (with the exception KY Afield ) are that way now. The story will read, I picked up my (insert mfg name) rifle loaded with (insert mgf name) ammo and found the deer through the(insert mfg name) scope.............

A buddy of mine did an engine build up for Hot Rod a few years ago. In it he used some really odd parts that I had never seen him even recommend before. I asked him why? His answer was that even though he didn't want to use the parts, the magazine made him use them because the suppliers were big advertisers. Yes, the mags are no more than catalogs.

I let all my car mag subscriptions expire years ago.

Last time I flew to Vegas I bought a Hot Rod at the airport before I went to my gate. It was full of LS motor stuff. I didn't really mind because I have an LS-1 in my Goat.

Well, you have to understand that the real purpose of magazines is to sell ad space; that's where the money comes from. How many times have you seen HotRod, CarCraft & others mention "so-an-so provided this $368 fan & shroud", etc, for a project car? Notice that most project cars belong to someone at the magazine, and they get thousands of dollars worth of stuff thrown at them?
The benefit I get from the magazines is working out WHY or HOW something worked, or looking at a build-up and thinking about alternatives.
I think Mopar Action is probably the best as far as tech and details; the Mopar Muscle engine contests have very little hard info or details by comparison.
What bugged me in the current HotRod was Cole Coonce's article on the funny car gal was pretty off-handed compared to his previous stuff like an article he wrote about The Surfers (Skinner & Jobe AA/TF) years ago. But maybe that was a subliminal message from Mr. Coonce.

SS&DI I haven`t bought a Car Craft or Hot Rod in years, I really miss the old mags like: Hi Performance Mopar, Bracket Racing USA. and SS&DI. the only mags I get know are Hemmings Muscle Machines and National Dragster.

Like it or not, We're a different breed. 70% guys that fall within the HR-mag target-market believe the world consists of only camaro's and mustangs. The next 20% might be interested in Chevelle's and GTO's. Another 5% are street-rod guys. And then there's us. I've always liked to be different, so I never have liked Hot Rod. The only ones I'll pick up these days are:
1. Muscle Car Review.
2. Hemmings Muscle Machines.

For a while, I thought Engine Masters, from PHR had some promise, but the latest issue is nothing more than on the surface drivel.

I learn more here than in any magazine.

Folks need to realize that when you see people getting excited about their car, doing engine swaps and spending money on their hot rods in general, that it really means that they are (or will be soon enough) spending their hard earned money in the performance aftermarket.

This influx of cash means the performance aftermarket companies have money to reinvest into R&D for everything else also.
- By extension, that means that some year the performance aftermarket might possibly give a crap about producing stuff for Mopars....maybe....probably not though, as they are content selling TONS of product to the LS crowd.

The LSx will be just like the SBC of the previous generation, in that all those thousands of guys building the pesky SBC and SBF, basically enabled a whole aftermarket industry to be able to thrive and have the operating capital to be able to operate and innovate.

The world is really much bigger than most Mopar guys will allow. Embrace the fact that in this 2010 economy, anyone is building a fast car with any powerplant.

Encourage people to buy parts from vendors too...they might just also produce a product that you like to use.

Back to bickering about Mopar 590 cams and SuperStock springs, I guess.

Since magazines exist to sell ad space, and the stories are crafted to help push the products that advertise in the publication - it only stands to reason that the stories are about parts they are trying to sell. Since we are such a small market share and don't buy nearly as many parts as the brand x guys do, we won't ever get the coverage or be as happy with the "all brands" magazines as the other guys will. That's our payback for being "different". Actually I think Frieburger (sp) and the magazines have done a really good job of trying to keep Mopar stories in their publications. Compared with the number of products sold to Mopar guys vs the others - I'm completely shocked at the coverage we still get.... even if I do occasionally find an issue with nothing I find of interest.

I agree. One really has to wonder if the GM designers took some hard looks at big block mopar designs.
- Wedge.
- 15° valve angle,
- deep skirt block,
- Cross Bolted 6-bolt mains
- Relatively long rod design

- 15° valve angle,
- deep skirt block,
- Cross Bolted 6-bolt mains
- Relatively long rod design

cooling system, timing chain cover and valley cover also. i actually thought a water pumup gasket would match up when i first took one apart

If you guys want to see some decent Mopars in the mags, I will tell you the same thing they are telling people DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT. Nobody wants to see a warmed over A,B, or E body with some alum heads and nice wheels, that maybe runs 11s. That unimaginitive crap is in the Mopar mags. You build a truly different Mopar and the mags will line up to feature it.

Every hi-tech Mopar that has been built the last few years, has been in nearly every mag. Just not many come around.

As far as the chevy oriented engine features.....a TRUE car crafter, can take an article about anything and learn from it. All engines are basically the same, just different logos on the side.

Monte,I couldn't agree with you more, I like the articles even if they aren't my brand,,,cause I learn from it and try to somehow apply it to what I have and hope I can beat them at their own game, my car may be a but it's mine, and it is what it is because of idea's from other brand's also.

Bring back the old Super Stock & Drag Illustrated...at least it treated us gearheads with some intelligence.

Ron

I agree, love Super Stock and Drag Illustrated. How about Bracket Racing Magizine, that was a cool one! Matt

I don't have one but its kinda confusing how someone with a 500 cube motor is running slower than a 446 with less HP in a vechile that also weighs more.

I tend to think in the early days magazines were started to spread information around. A group of people got together, gathered information and produced a magazine. A small number of advertisers took care of the production and (small) staff costs. The mags didn't have much additional 'luggage'.

These days magazines carry a huge luggage in the form of a large company on top with a lot of people in it not actually contributing to the quality of the mag itself, but taking care of all the stuff around it like PR, distribution, advertising, account and subscriber-administration.
Mags are viewed as a source of income. Sharing information comes second to making profit.
In order to keep their profits (and bonuses?) up they sell more advertising space.

Having too much luggage wasn't that much of a problem in the 90's, but now with rising costs, a lousy econy AND the fact that the Internet is here to stay, these Big Luggage-mags are having a hard time.

Maybe it's time for them to loose most of that luggage and go back to what mags initially are ment for, provide and share information.

I'm a little too biased to respond to this question.

FWIW(s)
1. I try to collect useful tech info from articles, regardless of the brand of engine.

2. Even so, I've still hit the point where I've let every one of my subscriptions expire, too.

I think they are catering to the under 40 crowd, most under that age are not buying or building a bb e body, and drive it 500 miles a year, or tow it to the track with an enclosed trailer. I've switched to MCR its geared to guys that like pre 74 cars.

I just like reading about the muscle cars from the 60's and early 70's plain and simple. But I dont need different as I like them the way they were. I like a nice clean build and I like the street/strip cars as I enjoy knowing how they run whether its an 11 second Mopar , Ford or GM car. I myself am not into different custom built cars. Just give me street/strip or even just strip built muscle cars. What I dont like about Hot Rod and Car Craft is that they are and always have been about 90% percent GM biased. I like Hemmings Muscle Machines and Muscle Car Reveiw because they have all brand muscke cars on equal terms and that I enjoy. Ron

100% TRUE! I still have my car craft subscription because i think out of all the mags, its the best out there..mopar muscle absolutly sucks with all the bone stock cars or slow cars, and learning about LS engines helps me improve my knowledge in general...better than nothing when trying to learn

strapping a turbo on a new hemi can't be much different than the turbo ls swaps they do

At SEMA I spoke to several of the big shots in the mag industry and they all fear for their jobs everyday.(Don't we all these days)Page count is way down. Some want to do away with paper all together.(Now I won't spend much as much time in the oval office)One of the hottest items in print is Hot Rod Deluxe as far as sales go.The publishers were fighting to keep it a shelf sales only (more bucks) But the brass has just opened it to subscription.Sounds like most of us have let our subscriptions runout, I used to have seven, now down to two.

As the old saying goes, "you've got to know your opponent to beat them". I subscribe to 2 Chevy mags, 2 Mopar, an even split. Nobody wants to touch a laptop keyboard after you've taken it to the bathroom, so magazines still stock the library.

And the old Mopar magazines are very handy when you want to do a rear axle/diff rebuild. The Miller service tools are long gone and the more recent methods in tech articles are better.

All the guys yearning for the old SS&DI and some of the others, may not exactly remember what was there. Lots of event coverage, some tech, not much and good editorials. In the internet age, race coverage is instant and good editorials from those that wrote in SS&DI can be found on the internet, just have to look for it. Modern mags are about popular trends and fads. A slightly warmed over muscle car, is not a real popular magazine story at the moment. Now put an LS, late HEMI, turbo or supercharger on that muscle car and you have a story people want to see.

In a small artice within the ls powered car section they did say the 1st. and 2nd small block chevy crate motors are still the best sellers so there still is more old school guys than new.

Not necessarily...used LS engines are still available all over the place even with low miles on them. People don't buy a crate LS because you can buy a used 40K mile LS with harness and computer and everything for $3000 easy. When those start running thin...they will probably sell more crate LS's than they do currently.

The gently used old school Gen 1 and 2 SB chevy supply ran out a long time ago.

I think Monte is right....people want to see something unique. Mopar guys don't seem to like technology though....I'm adding a LS fuel injection, computer and coil on plug to my 440 mopar and have posted about the low buck conversion...but it doesn't seem like people are too interested even if it only costs $800. But thats ok....I think it's cool and unique.

My opinion, which truly doesnt matter.... is this....

They may not be doing the mods to a 5.7 hemi for a old 340, but the ideas, technology, and ingenuity definitely have helped keep my feeble mind thinking of new things to try.....

Example......when the GM guys developed the spread port, pro-stock style, big block head, the GM guys lined up for them in droves, because it was the sure way to push their motors to the next level. When a Mopar guy, designed a spreadport Mopar head, the "Predator", he was crucified, because it did not "look" like a Mopar head...........................................................Modern day..there have been countless redesigns of the BBC spreadport head and a new one seems to come out every couple months and the Predator head is STILL not readily accepted as a true Mopar head.....heads in the sand syndrome.

Thanks, Monte. And a few of the other guys.

In, say, 1953, there were FAR more flathead Fords than anything, and HRM covered Cad and Olds swaps. In 1955, there were still way more flatties and early overheads, but HRM covered the new small Chevy.

And to bring it home, in 1964 there were WAY more 354s and 392s than 426s, but HRM covered the new 426 Hemi.

Since I'm not at all into late model stuff, especially chevy late model stuff, my 1st thought was to throw away the magazine after I read all the non-LS stuff.

But then I reconsidered. It sure dosen't hurt to learn something new. Even if I'll never own an LS, at least now I'll sort of know what people are talking about when the subject comes up in bench racing sessions. So I'm going to read it, maybe I'll even find it interesting.

It sure dosen't hurt to learn something new. Even if I'll never own an LS, at least now I'll sort of know what people are talking about when the subject comes up in bench racing sessions. So I'm going to read it, maybe I'll even find it interesting.

That was my point earlier, now with the 5.7 and 6.1 Hemi's capable of making some steam (enginemasters mag) then maybe there will be some article's on the new hemi"s to give us a better chance of competing against the LS bowtie stuff.hint, hint

I am Mopar to the bone. It's all I buy and all I race, but it is not all I want to know about cars. I found the articles very interesting and informative. Who knows, I may get the chance to work on one of the LS motors one day and I don't want to be in the dark about them.

The one thing I found disappointing was the only Mopar in the mag. A 505 ci. with 4.56 gears only running 11s? My stock bottom end 360 with an outdated purple shaft cam and shaved "J" heads runs 11s. And they put a headline on the cover like it was super quick or something.

I posted something similiar in another topic. Is that car suposed to come across as quick? It is a nice looking ride & I don't have any harsh words for it other than it should run quicker with what it has.

Now that is funny, but true. Mopar guys love to live in the past and remember the good ole days. Well the truth is, today is the good ole days. The GM LS engine, 5.0 Ford, and Mopar 5.7/6.2 Hemi are better engines than anything from the past, and are the future of hot rodding. They are such great engines. Have you ever had a ride in a new 2011 5.0 Mustang, SS Camaro, or SRT Challenger? I have, and they are damn fast in stock form. How can you not be impressed by a stock Mustang 5.0 that runs 12.8 out of the box, with no modifications, and high 11's with a some slight hot rodding? Hardly any 1960's muscle car could run that fast in stock form. They are 10 times better cars in every way than the old iron we all dream about owning.

The LS engine in particular has made hot rodding affordable for the masses again. Not everyone can afford a cross ram hemi, max wedge, or stroker big block, or stroker small block, or even wants to. I am a mopar guy to the core, and I own a max wedge, but I love these new engines also. If you are not impressed with the power they can make with such little effort, you need to educate yourself and begin to understand why every magazine is doing articles on LS engines lately. The 5.0 engine is the new kid on the block, but you will see more and more aftermarket parts, and magazine articles for it as well. It will not go away, so get used to it, or bury you head in the sand and live in ignorance.

I dont have to get used to it.................I just dont buy Hot Rod magazine. I have been a tech since 1974 and worked for a Dodge dealer the last 25 years. So I drive the new Hemi's every day and yes I agree the new technology makes these new eng run very good but I have no interest in the new cars other then as a daily driver for me. I do all the major electrical repairs in my shop as I have done for many years so I know how they work. But I guess I am stuck in the 60's and I love it. Its good to see hot rodding staying alive on these new cars but I just like the old ones best. Ron
