Engine needs to be running and in nuetral. So that the fluid is being picked up and pumped through the trans like it should be.

as I always thought but learned with a power glide there's very little if any difference hot ,cold or running.

After checking running and hot it was rechecked when cold and sitting. maybe 1/2 pt on the stick ? now I know where it need be running or not

I assume the running part is to insure all the passesges and valve body are filled.

Fill it to the full level mark on the dip stick, that will be close enought to get you going. Most of the time I do mine that way & then make a run & come back & check it. I fill my TQ before installing it & never have had to add over a 1/2 qt. doing it that way. Hope this helps.

Even if you did not fill your TQ you still should not be over a QT low.

Cold level will depend on the size of the converter and how much of it has drained into the pan.

What are ya doing, starting a fresh trans? If so, I usually start with 5 qts, start it up, throw it in neutral, then run it through the gears, park to low, park to 2nd, park to 3rd, then neutral, let it set for a few seconds in neutral, then check and add untill full. most kitted VBodies will show the same reading in park and neutral.

Its not that simple though,it all depends on how much drains back into the pan when sitting.I dont think anyone would know that answer. It will read higher on the stick than the full mark.It will also be higher than the linkage seal if this helps any.

Mine does that...reads higher when off and cold (depends on how long it's been sitting).

Two to three inches above the full mark seems reasonable. I always run my trans. so there at or below the add mark on the dipstick runninng when cold, I do run the deep Mopar trans pan so anytime the fluid shows on the dipsticks there is at least three quarts in the pan while running. I wouldn't be suprised if the fluid would be higher than mine if you had the fluid level sitting at the full mark when hot
