Hey Sledgie,

Before my new Indy motor threw 2 rods out the block destroying the complete shortblock, it ran 8.97 at 149.9mph in a 2,850# Cuda.

It made 895HP on the dyno at 6,900 rpm.

Combo:

Indy max low deck Aluminum block. 540ci w/ 4.5 bore and 4.25" stroke. K-1 Crank, R&R 6.635" billet Alum rods w/ 2.20 rod journals.
Custom Ross domed 15:1 compression pistons w/ 1.205" comp height. Charlies Alum oil pan w/ milodon dual line swinging pick up and Melling HV pump.

Top end:

2100cfm Ron's Terminator Alcohol Injection on a low deck Indy manifold, 440-1 Alum heads 345cc intake volume CNC ported by MCH, 382 cfm @ .800"
Custom comp roller 286/294 dur @ .050", .782"/.765" lift, 111 lsa installed at 107 icl.

Headers: TTi 2" - 2 1/8" in chassis step headers, w/ Star Vacuum pump

67 Cuda 8.48@ 158.7 mph 1.18 60' 2,600 DA(so far...) 70 Super Bee 440 Six Pack 4-speed. 13.2 @ 104 Stock exhaust/Street tires.

Great thread Sledgie!

Most of these combo's have fairly small cams and I've been told by several racers that 440-1 heads seem to really like a smaller cam unless you are running alot of compression and RPM's.

My car is 3200#'s with me in it, compression is somewhere between 11to1 and 12to1 , shift at 6600, trap at 6900, 4.30 gears with 29.5x10.5 tire.

My cam is a Cammotion roller 706/661 lift with my 1.5 rockers, 281/283 at .050, on a 104.

Last summer I had it installed at 106, everyone said that was wrong, that cam needs to be advanced. I put it in at 102 this summer and the car slowed down.
It has alot of overlap I'm told, and my cranking compression is only 150.

The car goes easy 9.90's in bad air and .80's in good air but I think a smaller custom cam will actually make my car quicker.

On the other hand, RonP's 440-1 motor runs real strong with a big cam. But his compression is up there some.

looks like a nice combo!

seems most on here like the 280@50 and about .720ish lift range (as an average so far)

I did quite a lot of street driving, so I didn't want extreme lift and used endurance valve springs with pretty high assembled height; worked well.

3000 lb race weight, 6400 stall. TF trans. 4.56 gears 33 tall radial slicks.
Fully ported 440-1 heads,2.25 /1.81 valves. 15/1 compression. 4.5 bore 4.15 stroke Mega block 528 inch shortblock. 30 x 2 1/8 x 4 headers. First cam Isky RR 735, listed at 280/288/110 .765 intake lift with my 1.55 rockers, .685 exhaust lift. In at 110. dynoed 847 hp BUT I had to use 2 inch long tube dyno headers for the dyno session. Had a POOR PAN ON IT, and could only pull 1 inch vacuum in the motor on the dyno. After getting a good pan on it, my race headers and 7 inchs of vacuum, car went 8.77 at 153.16 mph with a poor 60 ft of 1.289.
I believe this motor likes a relatively short duration intake lobe (280 or less at .050) with lots of lift,.800 +. The heads still flow well up there.
I had a second cam specially ground for my combo, 283/296/112 with .775 lift intake 660 exhaust. Didn't seem to pick it up much if any. Cammotion spec'ed a cam with 281/284/110 in at 108 with .801 intake lift and 728 exhaust lift. I never bought that cam but kept the letter for information.

Just curious what weight,et.,car ?

On motor only, in a 72 Challenger with 4000 converter, foot brake, 4.30 gear with 30" slick, through the mufflers weighing a tad under 3500 lbs, I went 9.87 @ 137. I didn't run it much on motor passes (like Monte ) because I set it up for nitrous, so Im sure if left a lot of ET on the table not doing tuning. I shifted at 6800 and crossed at 6900.

All I can add is the pump-gas 499 440-1 engine that Herb McCandless & Co. built for the '95 Hot Rod Pump-Gas Big-Block Challenge ran a Cam Motion roller that spec'd 276/281 @ .050" w/ 110 LSA installed on 106 ICL. Lift was well over .700" w/ 1.7 Jesel rockers. McCandless didn't even care about quench then and ran flat-top pistons "way down" in the hole (something like .075" or .100", IIRC) w/ only 9.5 CR.

One of the tricks about that engine was that it had a lot of epoxy in the heads and manifold which were used to reduce the intake runner sizes and keep up the velocity. Too bad they didn't give either flow #s or runner cc sizes for those heads.

I wasn’t going to post but I had a little bit of luck making power with -1’s. My -1 engine went 169+ mph at 2470 lbs NA (never dyno’d so do the math), BUT my cam specs wouldn’t help 98% of the -1 users as it was way under headed. I spec’d it to maximize MY combination, it did have more duration than has been posted and the lift wasn’t as extreme as some have posted.

The cam is the single most important part of your engine and should be designed to give the maximum amount of air/fuel that YOUR engine/car needs and at the proper time. What everyone else is using is useless. Port volume, flow, cu in, intake, exhaust, compression ratio to make max dyno HP or torque. Then throw in car variables for best ET, weight, trans, converter, rearend, etc. Is the engine over or under headed? Don't be afraid to change lobe profiles with the same duration either.

Last one I had done the grinder didn’t like my spec’s and had something better. Lost .15 and 3mph, had one ground to what I thought and got back the .15 + .1 and the 3mph + 4 more. Was I lucky? Probably but you know the old saying “an engine is just an air pump” think about your combo and how to get the air through it (don’t forget it has to come out also) and go from there. LSA and ICL are VERY important to the complete combination. Just be careful of the broad internet statements, they like xxx duration, xxx lift, split, etc as they may or may not be true with your combination.
