My trans will shift into 2'nd...ok... under normal driving but when the revs are up it will completely block you out of the gate until the revs drop again. 2 years ago when I grenaded my last engine I was making some passes and missed a powershift into 2'nd on one of my last runs- I'm assuming I damaged something. It use to shift perfect under high rpm... Or could it be something as simple as pressure on the input shaft from the bell not being dialled in (I'm guessing not likely )

Bad brass syncros in the trans.
If it only happens on second gear.
Or maybe a bad 1-2 slider. I use to replace those a lot on Muncies when they wouldn't shift into 2nd under power.

I have encountered the exact same problem with my 833 4 speed in my dart using a centerforce dual friction....its caused by the pressure plate not releasing because of the centrifugal force....i went to a Mcleod soft lock clutch problem solved...amazing clutch...completely adjustable for your application...highly recommended

70 Runner your friends problem is probably due to linkage adjustment and its not fully engaging 2nd gear. Although bent/missing teeth on the slider or synchro could cause it.
Worn dog teeth on the speed gear usually cause this.

My Challenger has a Centerforce. It is with out a doubt the best clutch I have ever used. Many full throttle 12 second passes. I've never even had to adjust it. Doug

Just tip i used to repair many Japanese car transmissions for polished syncros and a good fix was to use some valve lapping compound and the old syncro/baulk ring to rough up the gear face before putting the new brass balking rings in . That was a T.S.B To hand rough the surface before installing new brass rings. Works great, also 75/140 synthetic lube helps for faster shifts than the thick 80/90 weight. The thinner the fluid the easier for the balk ring to "grab on" anyway good luck man, post up what u find. CJ

I used to have the same problem until I added a solid steel motor mount on the LH side. The factory insulator let the motor torque up too much and bind the shift rods.
Check out the above first before going internal to the trans. If you were getting a "gear clash" into 2nd when power shifting......then I'd jump to the blocking ring/synchro ailment.

Well I should have asked the obvious questions before...how will I know if the detent ball has fallen out? (I suppose the reverse lights would not work... ) pull the side cover off and fish for it? or is there a better way? I'm assuming that it gets reinstalled through the side cover opening as well?

Just undo the rev. rod and shift it into reverse by hand. If the ball fell out, there's no detent and it will be QUITE obvious.
I'd be surprised if that actually has happened. If there's no detent for reverse there'd be other clues, like when you try to shift into reverse.

Exactly what would those other clues be Dean? I can't tell you how many people this has happened to, none of them thought it was it either. Don't get me wrong alot of times it is the syncro and it probably is in this case too, but you sure wouldn't pull the trans if you didn't have to. Keep in mind when the ball pops out the spring remains. The ONLY clue the ball has popped out is it won't shift into second at speed.

Surprised noone mentioned dialing in the bell. If an engine has been rebuilt, or the car is being built to shift fast for any reason, you ned to indicate the bellhousing and make sure it lines up properly with the crank centerline. It's standard practice and the symptoms are most of what everyone is describing. I've not heard of sticky synchros or ever seen them but there's more i haven't seen than I've seen...lol. But I have seen misalignment by as much as .030" that does cause the input to put pressure on the mainshaft and geartrain that makes fast shfting impossible or difficult.
Well, art is art, isn't it? Still, on the other hand, water is water! And east is east and west is west and if you take cranberries and stew them like applesauce they taste much more like prunes than rhubarb does. Now, uh... Now you tell me what you know.
