Hey Guys, I have a 04 Caravan 3.8 that the water pump seal went bad last week. It leaked antifreeze on the belt and the belt started to chatter only at idle in gear. It has 92K on it so I replaced the pump and belt. But the belt still chatters. When I start it no niose, but as soon as I put it in gear the RPM,s drop a little and the niose starts. Get the RPM,s up a bit then it quits. Any ideas? This is driving me nuts!

Thanks Scott!

Did the belt tensioner feel smooth when you changed the wp and belt? Probibly needs a new one.

Tahnks Guys, The idoler pulleys feel fine and the tensioner moved freely. I even put a little WD-40 in it to lube it up. I just can't figure out why in only does it in gear?

Our 05 did the same thing. Ordered the tensioner assy and an idler pulley from Rockauto and that fixed it.

Not sure why--if the bearing was going or the spring was losing tension, but it's good now.

If you have the alternator with a clutch on the end,Then I would say that is you're problem.I know 2005 and newer have them, not sure if 04's did.I have replaced them for that reason.did an 05 about 4 days ago for a noise.reman alt does not come with a new clutch on it.straight pulley, and parts/clutch are not servicable.Take a long screwdriver and rest it on the alt,put you ear on the handle of screwdriver, see if you here a noise.noise will travel through it pretty clearly.

Yeah that alt clutch can drive you nuts.I had one at the shop and took me about 1/2 hour with my stethescope to figure out what was making noise. One stupid setup.Rocky

I should also mention that with the shield off. I had my wife start the van them put it in gear. I could see the belt out of gear rideing smooth as soon as she put it in gear with the brakes on the belt starts to jump around and chatter. Would the alt clutch cause that? Or the tensioner? Or do you think maybe getting antifreeze on the pulleys is the problem?

Thanks again for your time Scott!

I agree with the alternator. There is a one way clutch built into alternator pulley.

Hey guys, it was the tensioner. I put a new one on today and the niose is gone!

Thanks again Scott!
