I found this nice 67 Coronet 440 for sale and once I looked at it I has to have it. It is a rust free CA car with a few dents on the passenger side. Has the original drivetrain in it (318 2bbl)and was owned by a fellow MOPARTS board member. I have been looking for the right car to put my 512 stroker motor into and this will be the one. I have stripped the original interior out of it and will post some progress pix along the way.

that's sweet! I'd drop the engine in the boday as is and have some fun for a while. better than worring about scratching fresh paint.

The color is going to stay as I like it too. I am thinking about doing the interior and cleaning up the engine bay and leave the body work for later as it not too serious.

Here is a pix of the floors; fantastic condtion for a 43 year old car. Just a little surface rust on the drivers side that should clean up nicely

My grandson came over today and we pulled the 318/904 out of the Coronet; 1st time it has been out of the car since new. Engine bay looks fairly good.

Looking good Larry. You mean the engine is coming back to Mn? Glad you're happy with the purchase of the car. While you're that far into it I'd check out the power steering box. That one always seemed a little over-sensitive to me but I never tried adjusting it. I had similar issues with the 67 Fury you looked at and finally changed out the steering box many years back.

Best wishes as winter sets in too quickly this year.

Larry

Larry, I plan on pulling the steering box as it was leaking a bit after I got it home. Now is the ideal time to take care of the little things. I am completely satisfied with this Coronet; as I disassemble it, I am amazed at the great shape it is in. I'll keep you posted on the progress.

Well I pulled th leaking AC/Heater unit out; definitely a job with many battle scars and a few new swear words. Lots of holes to weld/plug.

The trunk was in remarkably good condition and kept that way by the previous owner. He sprayed the whole trunk with a rust preventative or undercoating. It took a lot of cleaning solvent to remove all of the tarry coats and with the exception of some minor surface rust around one of the drain holes; everything was rust free. I wiped down everything with naptha and sprayed it with a left over can of 620 medium copper that matched fairly well.

The passenger side floor had no rust at all but had a few bare spots to where the leaking heater core removed some of the paint. I had a little paint left over from the trunk and used it on the floor. The driver's side has some surface rust that I will need to remove, treat and paint before the carpet goes in.

New carpet and headliner; seats are still presentable. Maybe covers down the road. I ordered a headliner from Yearone and it came in very light color; no where near the sample I got. So I am either going to install it or have SMS do a corect color; only downside is that SMS is going to charge me 4 times what I paid Year one for their headliner...

Interior is close to being finished; new headliner, door panels and seats cleaned up nice with upholstery cleaner and a new dark saddle carpet. I pulled th instrument panel out, cleaned and got all of the lights to work. Installed a replacement front dash speaker and now the radio works. MOPAR MIKE is sending me some small items to complet the dash.

Had a shop take a digital pix of my gas filler door and they matched the paint exactly. I cleaned, prepped and sprayed the engine compartment. Got a few runs but I think the engine should hide them. Starting to put back the basic items in the bay.

Removed springs, shocks and complete differential. Cleaned and undercoated back half of the undercarraige. Wound up replacing the stock springs with XHD springs as I didn't want the car to sit weird with the SS springs. New spring hangers and hanger reinforcement plates from Mancini. Cleaned, painted and reinstalled differential housing with new U-bolts and shocks. Bought a refurbished 742 3.55:1 posi unit from a fellow MOPARTS member. Installed all new brake shoes and hardware along with new lines and emergency brake cables. Removed the trunk trim panel and polished it and re-shot the black. Located 2 NOS tail light lens and reinstalled. Next I will continue on underneath to clean and undercoat the rest and work on some frame connectors. I still am going to put it all back together and drive it before I address the 3 or 4 dings on the body. Car was completely repainted in 2007 and still shines nicely. I'll try and post some pix today.

Looks like it's comming along nicely, can't wait to see pics with the engine installed. It's hard for me to imagine a 43 year old car could be so rust free. I have a 2000 Jeep with more rust issues that your car, I guess that's one of the down sides to living down under.

Well with the help of QUICKD100 we were able to get the 512 on the dyno. With problems of bad gas, timing and a lean Demon carb it finally came to life with a Holley carb. After breaking in the cam and making 6 dyno runs with various carbs and timing settings we went back to the Demon carb, after Dave massaged it. We bumped the total timing up to 36 degrees total. Final numbers were 621 ft lbs of torque at 3666 rpm and 562 hp at 5551 rpm. It will be a torque monster. Here's a link to the complte story.

Coan racing is building me a special street converter; Doug's D452 ceramic headers, frame connectors and transmission en route. Should have the motor/transmission in place within 2 weeks. I will post some pix.

Doug's headers showed up today; nicely polished ceramic coated. Had to reposition the dipstick and will have to do a little spark plug wire rerouting to the back 2 cylinders.

Test fit the motor today; headers will be interesting to install on drivers side.

Way to go Larry!! Looking very good. I can imagine how anxious you are to turn the key on it for the 1st time. Keep up the great work. I'm so glad the car went to such a good home!

Hello Larry; hopefully I will have the transmission, torque converter and headers in by the end of the week. Then it will be the little things to take care of before it comes to life. It was such a solid car to begin with and the dents on the right side will probably be there for a while as I plan on enjoying it for a while......

Well, I pulled the engine back out and assembled the torque converter, engine and tranny. Installed as a unit; next was the headers so I dropped the pitman arm.idler arm and drag link and raised the engine up a few inches as the Doug's instructions stated. Passenger side went it easy but on the driver's side you have to partially install the headers, then install the starter before proceeding. The mini stater batt post hit the block so I had to shorten the post and install an adapter upside down so the battery cable/post would clear the block. I have a World/MP block so the water jackets protrude more than the standard mopar block. Anyway after inventing a few new swear words and a bunch of bruises the d/s header was installed. I had to make a .200" square shim to raise the d/s motor mount in order to have a little clearance between the header and the power steering unit. Surprising the column shift linkage and kickdown linkage from the 318 fit perfectly with the 512. Here are a few pix.

Why did you pull the motor to install the trans?
Also if you had the motor out, header install would
have been easy, just lay them in place as you are lowering the engine in.
Very nice looking car and motor.

It was a lot easier to install everything as unit as I was doing it alone. If I had my 2 grandkids helping like in the past it would've been a lot easier.

Everything except exhaust pipes and driveshaft hooked up. Sounds good with 2" Doug's open headers. Should have the driveshaft by next week and possibly take it out on a maiden run. Here are a few pix

Had to use a top breather low profile air cleaner so the hood would close. I might put a SS type hood scoop on it down the road.

Beautiful car and awesome project.

Old, tired, and sometimes broke down. Me, not my car...

Well I am almost finished with the Coronet; just have to get the exhaust welded, install the rear bumper and get an alignment check. I will fix the dents on the passenger side after I enjoy the ride for a while first.

Got the exhaust welded and tailpipes installed; had an issue with brake shudder and went through turning/replacing the drums and finally wound up converting the fronts to discs. The 850 Demon carb was a bear to start(no choke) and I replaced it with a Edelbrock 800 AVS and it starts and runs a lot better. Took it to the city scales and it weighed 3640 lbs with a half tank of gas. Took my friend for a ride and scared the heck out of both of us. It broke the 275/60/15s loose through 1st and 2nd up to 80mph. This is way too much for the street but is nice to have it on tap. Have a few issues that I need to fix before it is done. Need to fine tune the carb with an air/fuel mixture gauge and am still waiting for the rear bumper from the chroming shop in Canada. Am satisfied with the next generation torque convertor from Coan Racing and the TCI super street fighter transmission. The refurbished 3.55:1 third member howls a bit between 45-70 and am working with the supplier to correct that isssue. It is almost finished except the orignal dents that will be addressed down the road.

Also went with a fixed pitch fan and a shroud as it was heating up a bit at low speeds. Whether this will be a permanent fix will be a different story. I had to put dual 11" (electric)fans and shroud on my last project to keep the 528 Hemi cool at low speeds.

Hey, if you are in the area, you can see it anytime. Got the bumper back from Canada and will install it tomorrow. I will take pix of the rear with the new bumper and exhaust tips. Alignment, bung for the airfuel guage and we are getting close to ironing this thing out....BTW; I have had inquiries on selling the Coronet and will entertain all offers or trades. But for now, I want to drive it a bit before selling.

Put about 500 miles on the car and the rear main was leaving a small puddle under the car; so we pulled the motor and put a nice warmed over 440 in it. I pulled the pan on the 512 and found that the Mancini double sided seal retainer was contacting the #5 main cap; thus preventing the cap from seating. So I installed the original seal retainer and put the 512 to sleep awaiting another home for it. Just got the car back from the body shop today and the dents were fixed and painted along with a new vinyl top. I sold the car to a friend of mine and he is turning it into a white hat special. Here are a few pix.

So you sold the car? That would have been one sweet ride. Well, I guess anything with a 512 would be a sweet ride... What car are you thinking of putting the engine in next?

Tires on the rear were 275/60/15s.

The 512 was a torque monster and smoked the tires at will.

The 512 will be going in a 83 D150 project that I am working on; I know it will be overkill but quickd100 has a 770 hp hemi in his d100 truck....
