My car was painted in sections. The inside of the trunk, engine compartment, and the whole under side was sprayed at the same time on the rotisserie.
Then the car was put on a body cart where the main bodywork was done.(alignment of panels and all the filler work) The hood, doors, front/rear valences and trunk lid were taken off right before the color went on and were painted off the car.
As I learned, this is the normal high quality way of doing it. For me, I'd shoot the interior and underside, then assemble it on it on it's wheels, then block it, then remove the parts to paint and reassemble. The seams will move when it's supporting itself. If you really want beyond perfect, it should have the driveline in it too.
Well, art is art, isn't it? Still, on the other hand, water is water! And east is east and west is west and if you take cranberries and stew them like applesauce they taste much more like prunes than rhubarb does. Now, uh... Now you tell me what you know.

I have a dart convertible that only the jambs and inside/underside was sprayed on the rotisserie. I sprayed the backsides of the body panels (doors/fenders etc) off the car, removed the body from the rotisserie. Assembled the car, and will spray off the rotisserie. Metallic single stage acrylic urethane Q4 Medium turquoise metallic.

That seems to make the most sense on a single color resto type job. I'm going to do a van, and will probably do the thing in steps. Underside Inside except floor (mask floor) mask inside and do floor (using tinted bedliner) Mask off all painted areas and shoot jams and outside (different color). Since this doesn't have the gaps issues or the removable fenders, it's a bit different. Final call is the painter preference though, since they are responsible for the final outcome.

dirt,
Just curious. When you have painted with the fenders, hood, trunk, brackets and latches in place and you need to readjust, how or what is done to minimize the cracking or chipping when you break loose those painted nuts and bolts? Do you then spot paint those areas or simply touch them up with brush?
Yes, I was wondering the same thing????
Ditto here. I would imagine for instance the engine compartment goes somethig on this order:
Paint the engine compartment with the fenders and hood off. Install the fenders and hood then align everything up and checki the gaps. Then mask off the area from fender to fender. Paint the fenders and hood with bolts in pace? I'm not a body guy but wanted to have a hand in doing this kind of stuff to my car with the help of someone who is a body guy. I myself, would want to have my hand in restoring my car instead of just forking out $$$ to have someone else do it all. I dont mine paying a shop as long as a deal can be worked out that I can help in the restoration of it. Hope that makes sense..lol

i just use a few bolts and let the washers off, to hold on the fenders on to paint . then swap in the right ones, one at a time so the fender dosent move. The washers cover up any marks left from the bolts that didnt have the washers on them. Do the hood and trunk lik the same way.
Will there be any markings on the bolts? I mean, if you do it this way, the bolts are painted seperately, right? If so, then when you install the right bolts, will there be a chance of the paint coming off from installing them after? I'm not doubting how you do it Dirt but thats why I'm asking questions. No harm intended.

I paint all the hardware off the car. I bead blast the hardware. Apply one coat of epoxy, and as little paint as I can. When installing, tighten the hardware as finger tight as it can get. Finish with a socket lined with masking tape, or tape around the bolt head, or both if it will fit. Once a panel is aligned, tighten only a few fasteners until you are sure it is right. Once you have it perfect tighten everything up. It is inevitable to get a chip or nick, but touch up is each and never noticeable since the paint is thin.
