Ok admission time, I do NOT understand how a automatic transmission works. Its like a black box to me I dont get how u move fluid and get a drive shaft to spin and never have that being said I do have some idea of the various pieces.

So here is my riddle

a week ago my truck broke, Doing 35 mph about 2.5 miles from home im in the lft lane the light turns red and i brake and all of a sudden my tach is indicating no load and sure enough i can rev etc. no load, does not matter what i put it in rev d 1 etc no go, This is an 05 Ram 1500 Hemi 4x4 club cab with just shy of 37,000 miles on it. Just do not have a gear, no trans fluid, no noises no nothing, almost seems to me like the linkage is not engageing or something. Ok so i don't do trans work (obviosuly), I have em tow it to my shop

Jakes Automotove (board member and great guy here jake68)

course this is the sat of labor day weekend so it ssits until tue Am, they call and say yes u r right its broke but because we love u as a customer and because we r honest we called the dealer for u and it is still covered under warranty u should have them look at it. cool tow down to Sterling Heights Dodge (first, last and only time I EVER make that mistake!) where upon it sits for two more days b4 they look at it and then they take 3 more to repair it, basically they do a complete trans overhaul and replace the following

the torque convertor
the seals
the underdrive
the overdrive and reverse

reverse flsuhed coolant lines

Ok so here is where i need help, I had no noise no fluids, no nothing and the truck has 37,000 miles and gets normal servicing, can someone explain to me what happenned inside the magic black box that caused my truck to not move???

I dont get it, was it an internal seal issue like inside the convertor? I just dont get how this thing went from fine to no go in like one min with no other symptoms.

Oh and is this a known issue with Rams? It kills me that they rebuilt my trans with the low miles on it that it has, all of my driving is around town and I rarely haul anything with it???

Baffled

A total failure to move in either direction is usually a pump problem, I don't know the "new" transmissions like I do the earlier 727/904 based but they all have pumps.

I agree with the last post.and a 5 day turn around time isnt that bad,its alot of work to pull the trans and rebuild it and put it back in.I guess just be glad it was still under warranty. It just a mechanical item which can fail right away or 175,000 miles down the road, theres no real mileage thats the magical # for them to go.

My issues with SHD have zero to do with the work performed. I DI have an issue with them not even looking at it for 2.5 days and then telling me literally EVERY day it would be done that day for the next 5 and the fact that every single communication that I had on this issue was me calling them. Thier customer service BLOWS! and that is not the fault of the mechanic turning the wrenchs.

Ok so am I to understand that there is a fluid pump inside the convertor itself and that is the most likely culprit and that is not in and of itself a replaceable part? its easier to replace the whole unit? Also is this just kind of a freak one off or should I be doing something specifically to try to ward off future trans issues? Thx for the quick responses btw

the pump is not in the torque converter its in the transmission, and if the converter or pump fails it send metal/aluminum threw everything,so while all that it getting pumped threw the trans it can take out more than what just failed. The torque converter turns the pump.

sounds like you need some posi additive in the fluid of the diff.

Check the service intervals for that diff, it's 15000 miles, the sure grip additive wears out and needs to be replenished, better yet changed .

Oh and for all the hater's that will surely reply to this post, I work with a guy that has a Nissan titan 5.6L auto. He had his rear diff replaced in June and just last week his trans was replaced. He has 24,000 kilometers, that's right less than 15,000 miles.

As for the trans, when I had mine done under warranty I replaced the torque converter with and aftermarket one that has all steel internals no plastic pieces like the factory one.

Yes the nissian diffs are very weak.i have replaced alot of them/both front and rear at work and i have heard of alot of people having problems with them. And you just endup replacing the whole diff and not rebuilding them.

It's a dry heat
sounds like it broke an underdrive cluch drive splined shaft( internally)

if it happens it loses all lower gears

Could it do that silently though Bill? Really odd thing is I have had a ton of things break on my cars while in motion and generally u know it when something lets loose. This time I never noticed anything.
