Riddle me This --- Ram 1500 Torque Converter goes bad - 09/13/10 09:44 PM
Ok admission time, I do NOT understand how a automatic transmission works. Its like a black box to me I dont get how u move fluid and get a drive shaft to spin and never have that being said I do have some idea of the various pieces.
So here is my riddle
a week ago my truck broke, Doing 35 mph about 2.5 miles from home im in the lft lane the light turns red and i brake and all of a sudden my tach is indicating no load and sure enough i can rev etc. no load, does not matter what i put it in rev d 1 etc no go, This is an 05 Ram 1500 Hemi 4x4 club cab with just shy of 37,000 miles on it. Just do not have a gear, no trans fluid, no noises no nothing, almost seems to me like the linkage is not engageing or something. Ok so i don't do trans work (obviosuly), I have em tow it to my shop

course this is the sat of labor day weekend so it ssits until tue Am, they call and say yes u r right its broke but because we love u as a customer and because we r honest we called the dealer for u and it is still covered under warranty u should have them look at it. cool tow down to Sterling Heights Dodge (first, last and only time I EVER make that mistake!) where upon it sits for two more days b4 they look at it and then they take 3 more to repair it, basically they do a complete trans overhaul and replace the following
the torque convertor
the seals
the underdrive
the overdrive and reverse
reverse flsuhed coolant lines
Ok so here is where i need help, I had no noise no fluids, no nothing and the truck has 37,000 miles and gets normal servicing, can someone explain to me what happenned inside the magic black box that caused my truck to not move???
I dont get it, was it an internal seal issue like inside the convertor? I just dont get how this thing went from fine to no go in like one min with no other symptoms.
Oh and is this a known issue with Rams? It kills me that they rebuilt my trans with the low miles on it that it has, all of my driving is around town and I rarely haul anything with it???
Baffled
