need to change the outer seal on my 8-3/4"; can someone point me to an online step by step directive. I've got the axle out, and would like to know I'm doing this correctly. Basically, how do you go about removing this thing?
Then, when I reinstall everything, how do I go about adjusting the endplay?
I'd rather find an online manual to follow, than have a long thread of 15 different people telling me what they do, but anything helps.
Thanks.

Just went thru this you need a 3 jaw inside puller, it goes inside the seal then you expand it and like a slide hammer you pull it out...then reinstall the seal with a seal driver, make sure it is all the way in by measuring your old seals depth before yanking it out.

outer seal
if the outer seal appears to be bad ( gear oil on the backing plate?), it usually means that the inner seal is bad and the axle bearing is getting soaked with gear oil and leaking past the outer seal and on to the backing plate. If the outer seal really is bad for some reason then you will need to press/cut the bearing off (you will need a new bearing) to get to the seal and be careful not to damage the bearing retainer plate while doing it.

I figured that if gear oil is getting to the outer seal, then the inner seal must be gone also, however, Im going to tear down and rebuild the entire rear end and suspension this winter, so if I can just buy a month or so to finish out this year with an outer seal, I'm gonna try that. I'll check the local rental place for a puller like shown above.
What about endplay adjustment? just rotate the lock-nut until its within spec, install the lock clip, and done???

Well, couldn't come up with the right puller. So I just went after it the old fashioned way... Screw driver & hammer. 3 minutes and it is out.
What I realize now is that I was confused with the inner vs. outer seals. What I was looking at is the inner seal, I see now that the outer seal is on the wheel side of the bearing. The inner seal is what I'm working on. live & learn.
Getting there, back to O'Reillys for the inner seal.

Okay: Seal in. Bearings packed (both sides). Axles installed @ 35 ft. lbs. Endplay set at .009. Brakes back together...... Not so fast. How in the hell do you get the little spring loaded shoe retainers over the keyed stud and turned???? Id like to get this thing out of the garage and take it for a drive. but at this rate, not gonna happen. Thanks guys.
