My 92 D250 seems to be leaking from the low side shrader valve. I converted to 134A six or seven years ago.
I've had a slow leak that has been very difficult to chase down. When I pulled the cap off the valve last time all kinds of leak detection dye ran out.
is it possible to replace the valve or are the screw on conversion caps likely to blame?

Have you tried taking a valve core tool and tightening them?

I haven't done that yet. I didn't want to mess with it while it was still cooling. It's not cooling now so it's okay to play with it.

Just about ALL parts stores should carry replacement cores though

Are they the same as tire valves? I thought they'd be a different size.

There are a/c specific valve cores, but I have seen regular tire valves used on occasion.

What or why would they be different than a tire valve core? I pulled them out of my system and I'd swear they (looked) are the same as a tire valve core.........they could have been changed by someone that didn't know huh

Just as an FYI I've seen and used standard tire valve cores in nitrogen charged motocross supensions (front and rear in forks and shocks) and the static charge of nitrogen in a competition shock is 150-210 psi and it goes up from there so IMO a tire valve core should work fine.

The R 12 cores are similar if not the same as a tire core but the R 134 cores are larger and infact take a different tool.

They also have a different type of O-ring in them
so the chemical makeup of the Freon wont have
an effect on the rubber in the O-ring

that, asside from some size differences, is the
best reason to use the proper type

Would be a shame to replace ti with tire hardware, and re-charge it only to have it leak through the
O-ring later
