Car is a 1964 Fury 4 dr with a 318 poly. If I release the mount nuts and jack the engine up a little, then put some little blocks between the mounts and frame, can I get enough clearance to pull the pan? I know that the crosslink and exhaust crossover must be lowered. Opinions or ideas? Thanks!

I've pulled the pan on my '68 satellite 318 LA block (with out jacking up the engine). - depends on the K member for clearance. If you could find an old mid 60's Chiltons Repair Manual - that would tell you for sure.

The repair manuals aren't going to tell you if you can do it or not. At the very least, you need to remove motor mount bolts and jack up engine, I would think. I actually removed the pan on my Bronco, replaced the oil pump and put the pan back on. I cursed heavily. Very heavily. The pump didn't prime (even though I preprimed and lubed it) so I took it to a mechanic, and low and behold it started up fine for him on the first try. He told me the books said you couldn't drop the pan without pulling the engine. I got it done in one and a half days, laying in the dirt and cursing. And this was on a Bronco with lot's of clearance. I'd crawl underneath and take a good look. I don't know what tools you have or skills you have, but at least look good and hard at it. Exhaust, motor mounts, radiator fan and shroud, trans lines, k -member and all. Everything. Just remember, about half the crank is going to be hanging down where the pan meets the block, so consider that in you clearence issues, as well as the oil pick up tube goes all the way to the bottom of the pan. Not trying to scare you, but I almost gaurentee it is going to be a tight, curse inducing fit.

Actually I've removed most of the top of the engine, radiator, etc. The stock exhaust is coming out as well, which leaves the crosslink. I figure that if I pull the pinion off the steering box and drop the idler arm, that should get me enough room. Need to swap out the rear seal and thought I'd look at the bearings while I'm down there.

But the front of the pan sits out over the K member a few inches, which was my concern about raising the engine a tad. Maybe not necessary but I thought I'd ask. Thanks for the info.
