Maybe someone can help, I installed a floor shifter a while back, not too long ago i took the selector arm off the column, of coarse if it comes down any it won't crank, but last time out, i would push it up & still nothing, i moved the floor shifter to "P" & "N" & still nothing, i had to jump the starter relay, I thought there was a way to install a jumper wire to by-pass the safety switch, how can this be done, or is there something i can disconnect on the selector arm (column) to eliminate this problem. I thought it might be the safety switch, but its working fine now, just don't want anymore problems or have it happen again, it seems to act up at the "wrong" time .

What kind of floor shift did you install?
As the other reply posted, you should have the 3 pin neutral safety switch in the trans.
It's probably a case of the shifter being out of adjustment.
To verify that, hold your foot on the brakes, twist the key to start/crank and move the shifter back through the gears.
It will only start when the trans is in park or neutral. Where the shifter says it is may be a whole different thing if the adjustment is off.
It could also be that the wire is broken or the plug came off at the trans.
Do your back-up light work when in reverse? They're run through the same trans switch (the other two wires).
Kayse can't keep up at all now. lol

Its a 71 Swinger, it does have the 3 wires, it doesn't do it all the time, but IF i lower the original column where the shifter arm was (or it falls on its own) it won't start in any gear, if i shuv it back in place it'll turn over like it should (in "N" & "P"), but "sometimes" it acts up & won't turn-over, so i'm thinking its in the column, there must be a wire or something that column.
I'll double check the position of the arm on the trans with my floor shifter & make sure its adj.

If you have the 3 wire switch on trans, then the original column shifter is not involved in the starting. What year?
How could it NOT be involved, it has to be

It's not, all the wiring goes thru the neutral safety switch. To bypass it ground the terminal on the starter relay and it's out of the circuit. Got to be careful as the car will start in gear.

What if you don't want to bypass it and you don't want it to be able to start in gear? it didn't do that from the factory did it?
I am only recommending to bypass it temporally to see if it is the problem. If it is then the shifter linkage needs to be adjusted.

The neutral safety can be bypassed by pulling the brown wire off the starter relay and running a jumper wire from that stud on the relay to ground. It's grounded through the tranny when it's working properly.
I would not recommend doing it as there's a reason that it called a neutral safety switch. It prevents the car from being started in gear and running over anyone. The neutral safety is required to work to pass the tech inspection at the track.
As far as moving anything on the column, is there any linkage still attaching it to the trans linkage?
Kayse can't keep up at all now. lol

Grounding it like that is like putting a standard(manual transmission) starter relay on it. Like said above it was suggested to see if that's the problem. Cause it might be in the relay itself....but most of the time if I'm not mistaken it's the switch in the trans. Which you can go get a new one at Napa here is this part # ECH NS6562.

No, all the linkage is gone, ok now i see it would have nothing to do with it anymore , i'm a dumbazz . The only conclusion i can come to is its either the adj. is off, the switch is going bad (this is most likly the problem), or its getting a weak connection, OR could it be in the starter relay , i have noticed its acted up alot more sence i installed a new cable for the shifter.

Thanks for the part # Robins, i might as well get a new relay too.

Here's a pic of the switch, it screws into the trans. It's spring loaded in the trans (white plastic end), sometimes the spring goes bad and it can't make contact to ground.
Kayse can't keep up at all now. lol

Even before it would act up on acassion, but not this bad, i know those safety switches are sensitive as to there possitioning.

Also check the bulkhead wiring connections then. If the switch is position sensitive then the shifter is either out of adjustment or it's a bad switch .

The brown (center wire on the switch) goes from the switch straight to the starter relay. It may have a connector somewhere in between, some cars don't. It doesn't go through the firewall bulkhead connector, it stays in the engine compartment from 1969 on.
