was at a friends house, and he said "you hear that? that's my next door neighbor's nova."

went over to check it out, a black 63-64 chevy II, tubbed, slicks and a 454, (that's all i know about it).

friend said, "mickey has the road runner out there."

"you want to run it?"

"sure, but it won't be much of a run against this!"

this thing sounded nice! serious suspension set up, lots of traction, if he had the power, but what the hell!

long story short, we end up on an expressway, no cars in sight, and go for it at about 10mph. end of first he has me by about 1/2 a car length, going into third about a car, and going into 4th, when we shut it down, he was 1 1/2 -2 lengths in front of me, (but novas are short cars ).

we slow down and he nails it again, which i wasn't expecting. i was in 3rd, and should have gone to 2nd, but i just nailed it. i was at 3000 or so, and he started leaving me behind but once it got above 4000 we were moving pretty even. light coming up in the distance, so we shut it down.

not bad at all, thinks i. i expected to get whooped a lot worse than that! can't imagine what that car weighs, but with the work he's done i wouldn't be surprised if it was many hundreds of lbs less than the road runner. i don't know what he's done to the engine, but if it as mean as the car looks and sounds, it should be pretty nasty!

he is off to a friends, and i have to turn and find my way back to where we came from. so we wave and head off.

my 8 year old son came with me, and was as giddy as he could be, his first drag race, he loved it!

so i'm happy thinking i did well against a car that should have walked over me a hell of a lot worse than that.

then i talked to my neighbor, and he said, "i think i know that car, it's a 9.50 car!"

" i don't know", says i, "i did pretty well against him!".

"yeah, unless he was just playing with you..."

hmmm.... hadn't thought of that!

but damn that was fun! i love this stuff!

Good Job, i doubt he would have been messin with you. you never know what to expect out of a chevy but a MOPAR you can expect it to run right next to another car or walk off and leave his as-

Sorry but you don't sound to smart doing that with your 8 year old some in the car. Have you ever heard of child endangerment? They take kids away for less.

it's ok to butt heads, just don't do it with a butthead

so out here people travel 80mph+ on the highway all the time. so what is the difference between doing 80 in a normal driving situation and getting in an accident, and this?

we were two cars on a 3 lane divided expressway, with no other cars in sight.

so what really is the difference between traveling 80mph, and traveling 80mph by getting there quickly?

Mick is a mature man and a very good Father.. I'm sure if he didnt feel it was safe, he would have never put his son in this situation..

Maybe so... but IF a cop would have seen them racing
the cop would say differently... not smart

What is all done to your RR, better yet, what does it run in the 1/4??

Any moderately built 454 powered chevy-II should see 10s if its built right, nothing fancy, just well tuned with the basic goodies, its very possible he was playing with you.

I dunno I saw a 454 stuffed into a 66-67 chevelle this weekend at the shop were my car is. It looks all kinds of impressive w/ aluminum heads, 1000cfm throttle body and BIG headers. I say to my buddy who's working on my car, "wow that thing must run". he starts to laugh, "you'd kill him that thing only put out 276hp at the rear wheels and only 303 footlbs of torque. It's all for show".

I KNEW the Buzz Killingtons would IMMEDIATELY post! I regret that I wont be able to have the Demon up and running until my kids reach 18 and the child support is no longer required. As kids they will miss out on the jaunts with their dads mopar.

Keep old mopars alive.

I agree. Could you live with yourself if something would have happened? Street racing is a bad idea although most of us have done it but street racing with your 8 yo son is just stupid.

in a word, yes.

that 1/2 mile stretch of expressway we had at that moment was no different than a track, minus the personnel. bordered on both sides, wide and no on ramps.

we all make our decisions, and the ones that come from the gut are always the right ones. at that single moment, i knew it was the thing to do. if i felt different, i wouldn't have done it, period. drag racing down a city street with traffic all around, after a few beers at night? i'll agree with the rest of you on that.

but that is my life, i take risks that most people don't. i go to some of the deepest, most remote, most extreme places in africa, where there are no roads and there are no phones and there are no safety nets. out there, you are on your own, period. and as soon as my son is old enough to say he wants to go, i'll take him. and if something happens, then that is what it is.

one man's risk is another man's yawn.

i agree about a 454 chevy II, which is why i was surprised that i kept up as well as i did.

as for my car, i've been chasing missing horsepower for a while. my first time at the track, (first time ever), i did 13.1's at 109mph. i couldn't keep the rear tires from spinning, and just had to leave the line like leaving a stoplight, so that had a lot to do with it, not knowing how to launch the car with tires that have no traction.

it's a 472 with aluminum mopar heads, cam is 241@50, .582/.546 113 lsa, stage V intake, 2 eddy 650's. not quite sure of the compression, as i don't know how far in the hole the pistons are, but a rough guess using a compression calculator is 10:1.

i think i've done some reasonable tuning improvements since that track time though. i had it on the dyno and it did 467 ft lbs of torque at the rear wheels. hp was 421 and climbing, but he let off after he saw the torque peak, which i didn't realize until later, so not exactly sure what that would have been.

some real tires are somewhere out there on the horizon, and i got an LM-1 the other day, so hopefully before too long i'll get it back to the track and see what it will do.

Your talking Malibu vs. chevy-II, theres a "solid" 1000 lbs. right there with the same drivetrain, so there is no comparison, I have seen & still do many many BB chevelles "kicking ass" at the track in full trim, solid 10 second cars tagged & stickered, sure most are 502s or 496s, but your talking alot of weight, my heart is in mopars, but i still like chevies, i'm sure that 454 chevelle was fairly mild on the inside, or it was just plain built wrong for those #s, a stock 454 LS6 will easialy see those #s too the wheels, I road in 1 back in the 80s, it was all stock with just mufflers, definitly got my attention . Another guy i knew had a 69 396 Nova (375 horse), that car scared the out of me, now of coarse i was 19 yrs. old at the time, it was a solid low 11 car. Mopars will ALWAYS be the under-dog, its just that way, so its always nice to beat up on a chevy, i've done it many times in my duster, but if i beat a chevy that should have beat me with its combo, it was not built right period, but if it was, i lost that simple, i've had a few SB Novas & chevy-IIs stomp my ass at the track, then again, i've stomped a few, if its built "right", it'll run, no matter what it is, you find this out with age

for the price off the LM-1 you could of had good tires and a vacuum gauge. more than enough to tune your ride...and have some fun

Well yes thats a good idea, even better yet have your 8 year old son be the flag man. Just tell him to go over to the other side of the express way after you take off and you'll pick him up on the way back.

A rolling start up to 80 with a 13 sec car definatly not child endangerment.

Look how many people rip around the interstates at 70mph in the rain with children aboard, Now which is more dangerous

Teach the kids young and they'll excell wait till they're teens and you'll likely have a tard on you're hands.

My 8,4,and 2 year old love big burnouts and and eigth mile hits with my 11sec valiant

The 6 month old is a little young yet give him another year. What ya teach em now will stay in they're memory forever. My oldest boy got his first dirt bike at age 3. He can ride anything you put him on now at age 8. I see neighbor kids around 13,14 that can't even ride 4 wheeler. Then they get hurt and I think it's the parent's fault.

I'm currently teachin the 8yr old how to drive a car. never too young to learn
