I agree. Could you live with yourself if something would have happened? Street racing is a bad idea although most of us have done it but street racing with your 8 yo son is just stupid.
in a word, yes.
that 1/2 mile stretch of expressway we had at that moment was no different than a track, minus the personnel. bordered on both sides, wide and no on ramps.
we all make our decisions, and the ones that come from the gut are always the right ones. at that single moment, i knew it was the thing to do. if i felt different, i wouldn't have done it, period. drag racing down a city street with traffic all around, after a few beers at night? i'll agree with the rest of you on that.
but that is my life, i take risks that most people don't. i go to some of the deepest, most remote, most extreme places in africa, where there are no roads and there are no phones and there are no safety nets. out there, you are on your own, period. and as soon as my son is old enough to say he wants to go, i'll take him. and if something happens, then that is what it is.
one man's risk is another man's yawn.
Big differance between the stupid street race and track. At the track they would not allow you to be dumb enough to let the kid be in the car. What you call a race is just a joke.
If the MODS did their job I would not be hitting the notify MOD button. LOL

Well yes thats a good idea, even better yet have your 8 year old son be the flag man. Just tell him to go over to the other side of the express way after you take off and you'll pick him up on the way back.
Narrow minded , If you could "read" i said to leave the little one at home, then you make a comment like this .
Oh wait, maybe its because i like chevys too .

We all like to romp on it once in a while, but going out with another car to race on the street, AND bringing your 8 y.o. kid with you??? It's been a while since I've heard of a dumber move than that from a grown adult.
My parents raced when i was younger and in the car ( my dad still does and im 19 now), guess they must be dumb too He had an innocent race with his son and made some memories big deal dont cry about it, If it wasnt for parents getting kids hooked on cars at a young age there would be nobody to continue the hobby

it's a 472 with aluminum mopar heads, cam is 241@50, .582/.546 113 lsa, stage V intake, 2 eddy 650's. not quite sure of the compression, as i don't know how far in the hole the pistons are, but a rough guess using a compression calculator is 10:1.
If that chevy-11 was not playing with you, you kept it within a car or two and you were running a 13.1 et run at the time then your vehicle has the potential to absolutely obliterate him! I'm running almost the identical combination (same carbs, cube's, intake, gears) with the exception of more cam, auto, less compression and less weight I'd guess. I am using drag radials though, and that might help you!

You guys need to lighten up on this guy. I can recall countless times with my ol man in the 69 Charger sitting in the back seat eating ashed from the center ash tray when he grabbed 2nd gear. I can also remember doing cookies in his 70 340 `cuda. Thats what got me hooked as a gear head, and think thats what keeps the younger kids interested in old iron. There isnt a father on this planet who would purposly endanger his children, even a drunk like my ol man, But I love him for doing all the stuff we used to do. We even went 4 wheeling in his 440 powered ramcharger through minimum maintenance roads in 3ft of powder snow.
I give my 19 month old lil girl rides on "her" go cart, and she loves it. She loves riding on the 4 wheeler, and basically anything that has an engine and makes noise. She cries when I fire up my Harley. She comes running at me arms out wanting up, and I just cant give her a ride on my big bike, way to dangerous.
But Im sure a lot of us on here got started by that "feeling" with our dads whenever he would row through the gears, or lookover at ya in he 69 dart GTS 383 convertable, and say "ya wanna go fast around that guy". I never said , well dad, that is very dangerous, stupid, and what if there is a cop, you know dad, Im in here, and I could get hurt, so Ill have to kindly decline on your offer. HELL no I said lets go daddy!!

"some real tires are somewhere out there on the horizon, and i got an LM-1 the other day, so hopefully before too long i'll get it back to the track and see what it will do."
for the price off the LM-1 you could of had good tires and a vacuum gauge. more than enough to tune your ride...and have some fun
oh, i know that. but the track is a long ways away, and i live in a very dense area. not a lot of places to spend some real time opening it up.
so i decided to get the LM-1. that will get my A/F dead on, so i can play with simpler things at the track, timing, etc...
besides, i got a decent deal on the LM-1.

not a bad idea. but he did take me, so if i'm going to, i'll need to get it dialed in and see if there is anything more there.
but this time, instead of leaving the little one at home, i'll have him flag the race and then lead chase on his bicycle to draw the cops away, and that way i can keep this thread going

I agree Dont let the other spoil the great moment. A aware dad even behind a old Muscle car is 3x more aware tha most any women can be....EVER.. Take the same women add a car load of kids, and then put a cell phone in there hands..... No thanks..I would rather have my kids ride with the dad...
Great story BTW

here is my Your Hemi makes way much more HP then his 454, a lot of the pro stret cars are for looks only, although when setup right they put out very decent 1/4 et's as they have no traction issues. From a rolling start, all of his chassis work is useless for a less then 500 hp engine, so you were at par as for traction, your engine is making more HP then his 454, The only advantage he had on you was weight saving, although a well built cage/tubbed car with a BB chevy should be at least 3000 lbs and your b-body Hemi should be around 4000. If i were the owner of that tubbed Nova, i would never drag race from a rolling start, it would be from a dead start... using the car to its full potential.

I think you need to see why your 472 Aluminum headed Hemi is only getting you 109mph in the 1/4. Is the car falling flat at the big end? I'd think that set-up should be could for close to 120. My iron headed, smaller cammed (solid) 440-6 should be in the 114-117 range. Try a set of holleys on that thing. I do agree, some of those "tubbed out" low slung BB cars are for show only. Get some tweaking done and some slicks and have him meet you at your local track.
that's the plan really. i'm not so concerned about him, i'm much more concerned about getting the car to where it should be.
once i do, no issues paying him a polite visit to say hello
