Jules: In your experience have you found that the wiring harness is the same for both the 2 and 3 speed? In other words, if the switch and motor were replaced, would it be a "plug 'n play"
I'm not Jules but the answer is yes .

The variable switch and the 3spd switch have different plugs
I know that. I asked because many times the harnesses are universal and can accomodate either. You see harnesses with a zillion unused connectors hanging out unused all the time.

no it doesn't work, found out the hard way, someone changed either the switch or motor at some time and took a little while to figure it out.

This thread still does not mention year and model of car. More info please. Jules
What , you're not a mind reader ? Of course that info is not mentioned , complete info when people ask questions is hardly ever given , you have to it out of them.

Much like myself you are ASSuMEing the type of car, But the sreen name of the person that asked the question tells me he has a 68 B body so I felt confident answering his question. 68-70 B body there is no separate dash harness for 2 speed or 3 speed so it's pretty much PLUG n PLAY as asked if you have the correct parts.

A jumper wire goes between them.
