I had a 360 built for me by a reputable local guy.Someone else installed it. When I got it back, the car timed and ran okay until I drove it. Under load the car would crap out. With an easy gas pedal, it ran okay.Since, I have put in a compete MSD ignition and a new 650 edelbrock. It is still the same. It craps out when I step into it.....

Crap out is pretty generic so how about a better discription of what it's doing.

Looses all power and makes popping sounds until I let off the gas. I thought maybe it was not getting enough gas, but now I don't think so. It revs fine when the car is standing still. Its only when it is its being driven

Well there's your problem right there!...MSD...(Might-Sputter & Die)

Sorry couldn't help myself,...but seriously, recheck your installation/wiring of the MSD,....take the time to reread the wiring instructions, eliminate any possible errors, seen way to many guys foul their ignition with a MSD installation, regardless of your experience, double check

The problem was exactly the same before I installed the ignition

Confirm float levels in the carb(s), accelerator pump operation, possible PCV valve malfuction, sounds like no advance of the ignition under increased RPM,....it's easy to blame, or find fault with componets in these situations, because they can mask themselves, and cause you to chase ghost problems, or create them,...start by confirming the function of the obvious, 1- air(vacumm included), 2- fuel, 3- spark, in that order

I vote carb, sounds like it's running lean.

Sounds like fuel, but, what kind of distributor and is it vacuum advance?

Have you tried reversing the two distributor pick up wires. I have seen this kind of thing caused by reversed polarity. Just another guess while we are at it.

I had the same problem with mine, mash on it and it would fall on it's face, easy steady pressure and it would go. It was way lean.

I had this problem on my 68 Coronet when I got it. Ended up being too much initial ignition timing. When I would get on it the mechanical advance would over advance the timing and it would bbreak up. Car had 25degrees at idle with a standard mechanical distributer and lots of mechanical advance. What is your inital timing at? What is the max advance at 3400-3600 with the vacuum advance disconnected?

J

Years ago I had a 360 that did the same thing. Forget the 36 total and throw awy the edel carb, unless you can use a strip kit. Give the car all the total she can take up to 44 degree's or so disconnct the vac advance and leave it off. The MSD would be disconnected and a standard ignition put in its place Race parts on race cars it is evident that the car is not meant to race so get back to basic's. In the end if this does not work time to do basic diagnostic's. But from sound of it I tried like crazy to get my car to run using the Mopar bible spec's,it didn't, and I did my own thing. Good luck !
