I bought a six pack 340 car to restore and the motor was aready rebuilt. So i put the motor in and proceeded to get it running. It ran like crap and after about 20 min i started knocking and i had to shut it down. I then pulled it and took it to a local engine shop, after they looked it over they said it needs a total rebuild 30 over new pistons and so on $4,000 worth. I get the motor back and get ready for the 1/2 hour break in period. durring the 1/2 hour oil started to come out of the radiator over tube. I then pulled the drain plug to take out the break in oil to replace it with regular oil and i got only water. I then pulled the motor again and took it back. They found that there was a hole in one of the oil galleys and they patched it and rebuilt the motor again. First what do you thin happened? remember durring the first run i didn't have oil in the water.
Next the engine goes back in and before i did the break in again i filled the radiator up with water and the water comes out of a new crack in the head. What do you think about this? Remember there was no crack on the first and second run

Is this all just bad luck or ???????

Thank you

Not Mopars fault.
Unless you knew the person that you bought it from or was a reputable shop with a warrenty - check things out.
On second go - Find a machine shop that checks things out.

can a old patch get boiled out durring block cleaning? have you ever heard of a hole in the oil gally. And there couldn't been a old crack that all of a sudden appeared in the head. If it was crack it would have leaked at first right?

Did you pay to have the block and heads magnifluxed before you started your rebuild. Magnifluxing both the block and heads and sonic checking the block is usually worth the added cost.

the heads and block were both magna fluxed and showed nothing

And yes i wish i was lieing, the oil pressure pushed up to the water galley and put 60lbs against the water pump and filled the radiator. have you ever heard of a hole in the oil galley like that? and surley the shop couldn't have created that could they?

Appears to be a common mistake with a simple fix. The engine builder put the drivers side head gasket on the passenger side by mistake. Simply remove both heads and inter change head gaskets side to side. Reinstall heads and add fluids, throw a hand full of salt over your right shoulder cross your fingers and start engine. During engine breakin DO NOT LET RPM DROP BELOW 9500 RPM.

they disasembled the motor after pressure tests and found holes in the oil galley that travels from the block to the heads

I'm baffled, why would there be a hole there at all and not show until the rebuilt it

can i assume no one thinks this story is true? The fix for the hole was to mill out the galley and sleve it with a sleve.

I agree. happens all the time. Especially on the Hemi small blocks.

so a hole in a oil galley is not totaly uncommon?

And also when i put the engine back in for the third time i found out the back of the head towards the fire wall was cracked and leaked water. Can that be just bad luck or did something happen?

All of this has got me bummbed out, as you can imagine. also does anyone know a professional weld shop to weld the crack properly

Are you absolutely sure you are getting the same parts back that you dropped off. Some unscrupulous folks will take advantage of you if you aren't careful. Mark your parts and know what you have.

Just what were you getting sleeved in the oil gallery? Sounds like your re builder is full of some thing.

This is a T/A car the block has T/A cast in it and the numbers are the same, so they would have had to have a T/A motor to replace it with . as far as what was tubed i didn't see they just said there was a hole about the size of a pencil eraser

Yes i ran it but it had something majorly wrong internaly but no oil in the water and no head leaks. Then it went to get rebuilt and after that is when the oil was pressured into the water. out it came again and the hole was repaired, then back in it went then a leaking crack in the head?

I keep my old chewing gum on my bed rail for occasions like this but for the best repairs stick with the Dent-tine brand. Apply, sand, and paint as needed.
