macmic87 OP super stock Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 836 lancaster, new york	i have this annoying oil leak coming from the lower right side of the timing chain cover. i have had the cover off 3 times trying to fix (new gaskets and sealant). it is not the crank seal. it seeps out right where the cover and the pan meet. it will only leak when the engine is above idle like the oil is being pushed past the gasket from the timing chain. is there anyone else who has had this problem? what else could i do to solve this?

If this is a high mile motor, you may have excessive crankcase blowby. If this is the case, maybe the point where it leaks is the weakest link. In some cases, a worn out engine will push the dipstick out of the tube and spray oil and crankcase vapors out. Big blocks have bolts at the entire perimeter of the oil pan. I have no memory of having any leaks in the 5 440 engines I have had at the area you mentioned. Small blocks have the half round rubber seal. If the oil pan has stayed in place while the timing cover has been off before, the front 1 1/2" of the oil pan and gasket is vulnerable to tearing. Most Timing gasket sets have small sections to replace these exposed oil pan sections. If this is the case with your app and you DON'T have a blow by issue, maybe you could pull the pan and replace the entire oil pan gasket set .

Kern Dog Striving for excellence Joined: Feb 2010 Posts: 18,493 Granite Bay CA	I have used the windage tray on the 440 mills I have used, and somehow I dont have leaks THERE. I had oil pan leaks on the sides of the pan rail due to loose bolts. I used stainless bolts to compliment the chrome oil pan, and when they kept backing out, I added lock washers.

mopar4ya master M Joined: Jan 2003 Posts: 2,655 western PA	I have seen some of the timing covers on the RB's leak between the 2 bottom 3/8 bolts and the 2 upper 3/8 bolts. It will run down to the corners of the timing cover where it meets the oil pan, thus looking like the pan is leaking. Take a thin blade from a feelers gauge and try sliding it between the cover and the block. Good Luck Dan
