oil leak - 06/19/10 01:32 AM

i have this annoying oil leak coming from the lower right side of the timing chain cover. i have had the cover off 3 times trying to fix (new gaskets and sealant). it is not the crank seal. it seeps out right where the cover and the pan meet. it will only leak when the engine is above idle like the oil is being pushed past the gasket from the timing chain. is there anyone else who has had this problem? what else could i do to solve this?

Which engine?

Yeah, a little more info usually helps, but I'll offer this...
If this is a high mile motor, you may have excessive crankcase blowby. If this is the case, maybe the point where it leaks is the weakest link. In some cases, a worn out engine will push the dipstick out of the tube and spray oil and crankcase vapors out.
Big blocks have bolts at the entire perimeter of the oil pan. I have no memory of having any leaks in the 5 440 engines I have had at the area you mentioned.
Small blocks have the half round rubber seal. If the oil pan has stayed in place while the timing cover has been off before, the front 1 1/2" of the oil pan and gasket is vulnerable to tearing. Most Timing gasket sets have small sections to replace these exposed oil pan sections. If this is the case with your app and you DON'T have a blow by issue, maybe you could pull the pan and replace the entire oil pan gasket set .

my boss had this problem on his b-block stroker. he is running a windage tray and double gaskets just like your supposed to do. his problem came in with the timing cover not being long enough to seal up properly.when the cover was put on it just didnt line up perfect. he bought a 440 source cover which was a little longer and the problem was solved. he talked to brandon on the phone for quite some time about it and i guess its a common problem when a windage try is involved.

I have used the windage tray on the 440 mills I have used, and somehow I dont have leaks THERE. I had oil pan leaks on the sides of the pan rail due to loose bolts. I used stainless bolts to compliment the chrome oil pan, and when they kept backing out, I added lock washers.

402 pan i bought from you, timing chain cover from engine i bought from you, stock 69 valve covers with vent, 5 quarts of oil, both pan and cover were placed on machined surface before being put back on.

I have seen some of the timing covers on the RB's leak between the 2 bottom 3/8 bolts and the 2 upper 3/8 bolts. It will run down to the corners of the timing cover where it meets the oil pan, thus looking like the pan is leaking. Take a thin blade from a feelers gauge and try sliding it between the cover and the block.

Good Luck

first put the t-cover gasket on dry seat in down on dowel pins on block, many t-cover gaskets are to long from dowel pins to pan,so even with the tex it wont seal when it folds over on top tray gasket. it must perfect 90 at base of both gaskets. trim gasket and should seal with little tex,oh and put a little tex around dowel pins also
