blocking off the oil to the driver's side is just a way to direct the oil pressure back to the main bearings rather than have it leak away around 8 lifters that don't need it.

For high perf street motors I usually block off the driver gallery but then drill a small hole (0.090) or so in the plug so that oil still flows, but at a reduced rate. I just haven't gotten comfortable with the idea of completely blocking off the lifter gallery on a street car.

do you have a good source for the plugs to do that, i have about 5 left and none to be found in south florida at all??? know of a place where i can order them?

In addition, blocking off the lifter galleys helps if you bend a push rod or a rocker adjuster backs off and a lifter jumps out, your oil pressure will not drop to zero.

that's if your luck enough for it to happen on that side of the block, LOL.

What size are you looking for?

Back in with winter 2001/2002 when I pluged the driver's side oil galley in my block, I think I used a 37/64" deep cupped plug since the 19/32" wasn't to be found. I am running the 0.090" hole in it, and it hadn't moved when I checked it last. That was in Oct 2003 when I had a valve job done. The block had 110 passes in 2002, and 159 more in 2003 by Oct. I pulled a lifter and stuck a probe back to touch the plug.

Measure the hole size in the block, the 37/64" or a 15mm if available might do the trick.

i was looking for the 19/32. i think i tried a 37/64 in the last block and it was too loose to stay put. i guess i could alway's just run a ream through the hole and step up in size just slightly. thanks for the info.
Andy made it sound like the 19/32 were plentiful. i was hoping he would share his source. that might make things easier for people.

i am also a believer in running the plug as an orifice, instead of completely blocking it off. it sends more pressure where it's needed during start-up and then fills the lifter gallery for some lubrication there too.

Maybe my block had a new (or old) drill used at the factory and it cut a tight size. The other alternative is to drill and tap so the pipe plug can go back that far. But that requires drilling and tapping the outside plug one size bigger. A lot more work than just driving in the plug!

Or maybe the brand I get are oversize. I use a 1-3/4" on on trans speedo openings and the book says 1-49/64" is needed.

Expansion plugs link.

Look at www.motormite.com

Then click Dorman products.

Here are the exact plugs you need:

19/32" (0.59375") Dorman #555-009

And for the 727/904 Speedo plug 1-49/64"

Dorman #555-036

I got mine at Advance Auto Parts. Others should also carry them. John

My local Advance Auto didn't have the 19/32". The Autozone store didn't either and they both had the same assortment.

I know Dram that was an oversight. but you already have some. But as you have 5, but if you'd like, I'll mail you one giving you six, then I'll give Jim 2, and I'll have six.
That's fair ain't it (except to Jim)

Max, thanks for the offer.

I called around and my local NAPA had them in stock.
Their line is "CEP" and part number 219-3054 for the 19/32" plug. I stopped over during my lunch break and bought a few ($0.29 each) for my drawer/future use.

Remove all five main caps. With an 8-10” 9/32 drill bit drill the oil passages from the top of the main saddle to the lifter galley on the passenger side of the block to 9/32

can you use i normal length drill bit?
