Anybody have any good results with merge collectors? Are they worth it?

I've tested many different styles of collectors and
if you have a set of purpose built headers for YOUR
engine then they do help a fair bit... other than that
the cost per HP gain isnt worth it (to me).... most
people dont use a long enough collector in the first
place.... off the shelf headers are WAY TOO SHORT
when it comes to the collector

Does the old way for collectors still work? Mark them with cheap paint or crayon and cut them where it stops burning off?

NO... you would have to have a perfect tune for that
to even be close... I know many guys say that it works
but in reality its not close... for instance, if you
are running fat do you think it would burn in the same
place as if you were running lean... no way... headers
are a mathematical and sound wave function

Short of trail and error, whats the best way to determine the correct length for a collector.

How is this for a long collector?

"Turbo will be easiest, and at the HP level will also be easiest on parts. Spend the money to do it right, and you can build a 500 HP street motor that will live a long and happy life, and probably with a very basic short block." Those words must have left a bad taste in his mouth!

Companies like Burns Stainless can give you an idea on all lengths and sizes if you give them the info on your combo.

Send me a PM and I'll run your engine through my header
program... I'll need some info

Give me the bore, stroke, exhaust valve opening BTDC and peak power RPM I will run it in mine and give you the results as well.

4 into 1 header design:

Primary tube - 19.88"
Primary Tube diameter - 2.58"
Collector - 9.94"
Collector diameter - 4.91"

Using the numbers you listed.

EDIT - made a calculation error. Had two kids begging for a golf cart ride and entered a value wrong. LOL

Thanks for the info, but the car picked up when I went to a custom made 2" header. Primaries are 38 and collectors are 3 1/2.

The tube size quoted may be ID not OD, if so you may be closer than you think.

Tubing is always OD
EDIT
A primary dia of 2.58 and a collector of 5"... most
big blocks dont even go that big and this is a 422"
small block that makes peak power at 6800

Using another calculator i have that only uses rpm, ci and BBDC value -

Your Primary Tube Length is 33.26
Your Primary Tube Diameter is 1.95 inches
Your Collector Length is 16.63 inches
Your Collector Diameter is 3.71 inches .

I gave my info to Mr P Body a while back for my 636ci and didn't get that big of numbers.;) He gave me around 2.5 primary and 4.5 collector. 410ci i'm guessing closer to 2 inch
