Well it is do you trust the guy your buying from? Thats the only thing you got to go on. You could get a good deal or you could get stuck. You won't get your money back if you find something not to your liking. I've bought 2 cam and lifter up grades with no problems from fellow moparts members.

it's ok to butt heads, just don't do it with a butthead

No, unless it came from somebody I know and I've seen it in action and know it's history. Buying a used cam from a online auction or a swap meet, there is no telling what the specs really are.

I sell cams all the time, never heard of anyone having a problem with them. I go thru a lot of cams during dyno testing so I might as well make people good deals on them.

Cool Andy ...whatcha' got ? ..

I am looking for a cam for my boat ... in the range of .530 to .600 lift.... with a "wicked" idle. And something that will run-up-to about 7500.

There is a rat-motored jet boat on the lake here that I want scare-off !

WHY don't any of these manufacturers put any kind of part #'s on these sticks? ALSO ....I have heard of a LOT of different pricing on used cam a lifter packages .... is 1/3 of typical-retail about right?

Hello,

AndyF is definitely one of those people I would buy a used cam from but there are not too many i would. Jet boat hugh? He will be way down on power with a jet. Supposedly takes about 30% more power to run a jet due to inherent design deficiencies compared to a prop. They make a nice rooster tail but that is about it. He must have a very hot engine if you think you need to turn 7500 in a boat. Tell us more. Boating is my favorite subject.

md .... Well ...a big ole Rat motor has a little more power than a 383+30. so I figure we are about equal ... him with a jet ...and me with a V-drive. My need for a motor that will run-up-to 7500 ? ... just in short bursts.

Oh ...and there are deficencies with a V-drive. There is something like a low-speed WOT "slippage" of up-to 70% ... and high-speed of something like 30%.

My boat here is just an old Stevens shovel-nose hydro(fiberglass) I picked-up off eBay some years back. This rat-motor-guy has got me "hot" to get the boat done ...PLUS there are some real NEAT happenings up-here on some big lakes .... like Houghton and Torch Lakes.

All I want to have is something that will cruise all day long and will have a little PEP ...outa'-the-gate and upstairs a bit. Something way diff I am doing is to run a CLOSED cooling system that will be hooked up to the V-drive. The headers will have a separate system for lake-water-cooling and to "muffle" the noise also.

It depends, I have bought quite a few used steel roller cams, some injured and the some not . As far as a flat tappet cam(solid or hydrauylic) it would really depend if it was in the car and I could make sure the lifters where mark on te lobes they came off of and I got to measure the lobes of the cam for lift before buying it The second thing is to check the bottom of the lifters for wear marks, flat or ruined lifters and so on, probally best to not buy a used one of those on second thought

We change out used rollers a lot, never had any problems and they are less than half the cost of new, just check out the lobes and lifters when installing

I couldn't agree more. Buying a used flat tappet cam is like buying used underwear.

440Jim is running a flat tappet cam in his car that he bought used from me. Seems to be working just fine seeing how he is running almost 8 second times.
