I would like to go old school and make my own set of ss springs for a 3800lb charger. Have heard nightmares about new 'mexico' springs and I have a few extra pairs of a-body springs laying around. does anyone have pictures of ss springs or leaf counts and measurements from axle mount point forward and back?

i think if you get the main spring made for the correct arch, weight you could use the extra spring leafs you have.how thick are the springs you have?[each leaf]

ok try different angle. Does anyone have pictures, close up pictures, maybe multiple pictures of their ss springs so I could try to recreate them? Cool. Thanks

SS springs will not only use, just more spring leaves, they will also be thicker and stronger.

But , you can gain spring stiffness with the idea you have. You will also need to utilize some strategic clamps also. mike

Ma Mopar spent oh about a million of 1960 dollars and a full year at the track with the likes of McCandless etc to make them work--you ain't got a prayer --The Mexican springs are GREAT--all that talk is bs IMO Shocks at every corner and front end travel--setup, front eye location are the things folks get wrong and blame the springs--It takes a careful setup done by an experienced racer to get them to work like they should and WOW! They will work!!! To many folks get crappy shocks ( it said Drag shock in the catalog ) ---Honest...these days Cal Tracs are the way to go if you are racing and even they require a few months or longer of fine tuning to get the most out of--Buy some SS's--the 002 and 003 work best on most everything--they do loose some arch over time but that is not "wearing out"--buy some used--get great shocks like QA-1's or Koni SPA---BEST to find a racer that is hooking and get his advice-- We raced SS spings for over 18 years and found all this out the hard way but at the end had some bumper dragging A bodys! Good luck man!

Is this for a street / strip car or just a strip car ?If its a dual purpose car i can see running them for looks. If its a drag only deal ,why not go real old school and get sum slapper bars ?Im dead hooking with them on 8 inch wide slicks .All it takes is to set them up properly (angle and location of snubbers).Best 60' of 1.54 on the tiny slicks and i know they will hold more power if my motor could make it (proly 1.4 60 foots). My Dart lifts front and back on the launch and plants the tires hard with no wheel hop .Mine are Old Foxcrafts from the 60's and were a Craigslist score for $35.00 ...

Hey thanks metalstorm for pics. Listen money is not what ive got, mortgage, and 3 kids and a lousy economy are issues. What I do have is spare parts and tools. Im working on a b body street/strip but I have added leafs to a-bodys with lots of success in past. So why not try it on a the charger. I patterned myself a "caltrac" and made my own but I dont have mono leaf springs so all it really does is stiffen up the suspension and keeps me from bending front leaf section. I like to tinker so I figure going old school and trying a ss spring "clone" would show me what was working or not. But I have bent many!! front spring sections on HD springs and regular springs. I figure ss springs have 2 to 3 extra front spring layers so maybe, maybe they wont bend? anybody got some more info for me and thanks!

Yes, the passenger side needs to be stiffer then the drivers side. I think the SS springs added a extra leaf.

If you dont add a extra leaf you can add clamps to the front spring segment on that side to gain the same effect.

In the end you wont have SS springs, but you will have stiffer springs that you can tune with clamps. With your past experience and depending on how fast you want to go, you should be able to make something work. mike

What I did YEARS ago was clamping a 3/8 thick steel
plate to the front of the springs... same width as the
springs and also used a rear sway bar... did wonders
to my times

Ok Ok ill bite. Im bitter because I hope I can duplicate them What aside from spring rate and pinion angle and ride height would be different that create the SS part? I know only an engineer or ma mope knows but.... really guys is it that big of a mystery?

I was thinking of reinstalling the sway bar I took off when I installed my "caltrac"s this will be on the list of trials. thanks 3/8"? WOW that would definitely stiffen things.

Yeah!!!, There Magic dont you know!!

Take my words Literally,

"In the end you still wont have SS springs"

But that doesnt mean you cant duplicate their similer effects.

Witch is to mostly stiffen both front and rear segments with more bias on the fronts and even more on the passenger side for a hopefully tuned outcome.

Theres no Mystery, accept to understand the axel rotation under power.

The driver side axel and the passenger side

Counter those movements with spring bias along with pinion rotation and you will be fine.

IMO, the Most important part is trying to overcome the rotational lift of the passenger side.

The next is controlling pinion rotation perimeters.

Further, probably anything you add to the stock springs to stiffen them up will be in the right direction. As long as you dont increase the down force on the driver side.

So have at it, And remember!

When its all done and said, you still "Wont have SS springs" mike

know this has been asked but my understanding of spring rate...
Set spring up side down (taking in account somehow for the friction on the floor) and measure weight to make spring drop and inch?
