What type of sander should I use to strip paint to bare metal. I have a Ram with alligator skin textured OEM paint on the roof and hood (spider webbing gone crazy). Needs to come all the way off without harming the metal.

On the repaint, how much time should be allowed between the base color coat and the clear coat?

Thanks!

Use a DA with 5 or 6 inch PSA (pressure sensitive adhesive) disks. 80 grit works well (sanding scratches in the metal are good--primer will fill).

Most base-clears have a 24 hour window to clear. Check your data sheets for YOUR paint.

I use the 3M paint stripping discs and a drill to take paint down to bare metal.

first thing to do is get some razor blades and a scraper and scrape off what you can then sand off the rest or you will spend a small fortune in sand paper and time. If you do it right you wont goudge up the metal.

Stripper can be bought at most auto parts stores and even Wal-Mart, brush it on in one direction, throw some trash bags or plastic sheeting for about 20- minutes, scrape, brush, rinse off, sand off the rest with 80 grit on cheap D/A sander, the palm sanders don't work as quick .

Good luck

If you are going to buy a sander, I have a hog sander, its like a da but its sanding disk is geared so when you press on it while your sanding the pad will keep spinning, (it doesnt spin fast like a disk grinder so you wont grind into metal, but it removes bondo and paint pretty fast. ingersoll rand makes a pretty good one.
