LandShark OP member Joined: Jan 2010 Posts: 39 Tyler, TX	Over the weekend, I installed a 1997 magnum truck engine (360). The truck engine came with the factory starter. The mounting section looked so similar to the 71 unit except 1/3 the weight and mass that I was optimistic that it would install. An hour later, hope was lost and the factory 71 unit bolted right up. I am having clearance issues with the 71 unit and headers. Can anyone tell me if this unit should work? Attempts at bolting it up seem to say no, but I would like confirmation. Also, if it doesn't work, is there a budget starter out there that is small and can bolt onto this combo? I am running a 1971 904 tranny with balancing weights welding onto the converter behind a 1997 Ram 1500 magnum motor... Many Thanks!

scratchnfotraction I Live Here S Joined: May 2003 Posts: 15,487 Florida	some of the mini starters have a plastic wire adaptor/extention piece that you remove and hook the wire to the other 2 studs from the starter this helps clearance problems at the block/starter the newer starters are a fairly common upgrade now days i have it on a sb 318 and one on the 440 engine,I also use the mini alt on the 440 with stock alt brackets from the non a/c 440 engine the mini starter usally has a lot of header room and can be R&R with out to much hassles of R&R the header what exactly did not work for you on the mini starter?? that extention piece is the only thing I have ever seen that needed removed...then its a bolt on deal some of the later ones have a diff hook up on the small wire but a plug from a JY truck can be spliced..have that on the 318 truck

Kern Dog Striving for excellence Joined: Feb 2010 Posts: 18,493 Granite Bay CA	I went to the Fall Fling in Van Nuys CA last year and bought a pair of Doug Thorley headers at the swap meet for $25. SCORE ! My Duster 340 had manifolds, so this seemed ideal. The right side went in easily and look very similar to TTI in the routing of the tubes. The left side was a real pisser. I had it in and out of the car 15 times trying to get proper clearance. The mini starter solenoid was on the very bottom of the starter and required crushing of the tops of two tubes for clearance. I had to smash them almost in half . NOT GOOD. I ordered a new starter from Mancini, but despite what the salesman said, the solenoid was in the EXACT SAME SPOT as the mini starter. The stock starter would fit, but the electrical leads would have been too close to 3 of the tubes, so I cut the left side out with a sawzall and ordered TTI pipes. I have since read about some starter that allows the starter body to be clocked for added clearance. I wish I had checked Moparts before I started denting the Doug pipes.

Just use a regular starter from a dakota or even a minivan and it should bolt up after removing the wiring adaptor on the solenoid. Been running one for many years now without an issue. 383 w/ TTI 1 7/8" headers. '73 GK6 Challenger Rallye - 340 4-Speed

Life was a little easier when I was just a wrench.
