Yep. Valve body dropped down. Long bolt and nut and appropriately sized washers. Tighten the nut and bolt to draw the seal in. Actually pretty easy when i did it that way.

It is easy with the VB out. I've done it without even dropping the tranny pan on a 77 Volare though. Its tough, but less work (if that makes sense)

Pry the old sealup off the shaft. Dress the shaft with sandpaper/crocus, clean, install new seal by careful use of c-clamp. Very little room to work in.

Yes, I have changed the seal in my Challenger with headers.

Did NOT remove anything, poped the seal out with a screw driver going in at an angle and taped the new one in with a small hammer

Thanks for the info. If I need to r&r the VB, anything I need to watch out for? Been about twenty years since I've done anything like this.
I should have asked, is the ATF level that high in the trans.? Leaks just sitting, cleaned everything off and it took about four days for the fluid to show up on the floor. It is coming from around the area of the shifter stem, though.

done myself on same way LOONG time ago, and will be on that again pretty soon, since the pan gasket looks something weird too.

If wasn't because the pan gasket replacement, I think the C lamp and socket looks a good idea too.

BE SURE to clean-up the VB shaft itself. In most cases the shaft is corroded or rusty and if you do not properly prep the shaft .. it will just chew-up the new seal.

clean with brake clean, throw a ahnd full of baby powder around the shift lever area,it will pin point the leak

like said, prep the shaft for the new seal, dont roll the lip of the seal putting the VB back in either

yes fluid is that high and will leak sitting

I did it in car, pan and VB in place, using a cheaper version of the KD tools package there. (At least, it was cheaper than the KD tools I could have bought at the time).

Didn't use a c-clamp to install it, but made a hole in the floor to allow access to hammer it down. I had made holes all over the car, and had no carpet, so didn't hesitate to drill a hole..

I did my '70 Barracuda in place with this little tool I made

The split ring is just a spring fit, it holds the seal central with the hole while I screw the bolt from the bottom then just slides off the top as the seal pulls in.
