Can someone decode these casting numbers from a 69 340
crank PN-2858398
rods - PN-3406782
pistons - PN 2899479
heads - PN 25318940
engine stamping - FW340P29540302

I don't think the crank is original, but any info would be greatly appreciated

thanks,
340kid

"heads - PN 25318940" Should be 2531894 = X head.

A forged '69 340 crank wouldn't have a casting number, 2858398 is probably 2658393 which is a cast 318 crank.

engine stamping - FW340P29540302

FW340= Built at the Windsor engine plant
P= Premium fuel
2954= Build date September 29, 1969 (a '70 engine)
0302= Sequence number, the 302nd built that day.

F is the series (model year) 1970.

What are the 8 digits on the pad on the passenger side of the block right above the oil pan?

The partial VIN indicates that it came from a 1970 Hamtramck car. I do not have anything close enough to it to know exactly which model.

Possibles are Duster, Cuda or Challenger for this plant with the 340.

not sure on the differences with the steel crank,other than balance. but, in 72-73 340's they used a cast crank,which is the same crank and rods as the 318 uses. only the 318 will have a neutral balancer,and the cast crank uses it's own specific "340 cast crank" balancer.i have done alot of digging and found that if you are looking for a remanufactured crank and rods for a 70's 318,they are the same identical parts for a 72-73 340. as i had to do,just have to have the right balancer. (heavier pistons make it necessary)

Can't be a Dart. Not built at that plant.

ok. that rules out the dart. it's not a T/A block,so,not sure what it would matter what it came from,unless you are wanting that specific info to use for some woooo factor in trying to sell it to some loser that doesn't know any better and thinks it's "special" because it came out of a 'cuda.a 70 340,is just a 70 340. unless you have the vin# or sequential number from that given car,gonna be kind of tough.

I used to think that too, but one has surfaced so far. I am on the look out for more......

To the OP, what is the VIN on the second block?
