For my 318 motor what would be a better choice for a carb, Eddy 600 carb or the Holley Street Avenger 570 or 670 carb, motor consists of stock crank, rods, pistons, fully ported and polished 318 heads with larger intake and exhaust valves and a .020 mill on heads, Hughes Engines 318 whiplash cam, Edelbrock performer intake, 1 5/8 " headers full length , trans is a 727 with shift kit, rear 8 1/4 with 4.10 gears , all in a 74 Satellite, just a weekend cruiser to car shows and hangouts, so what do you reccomend on a carb

might as well ask Ginger or Mary Ann, blondes or brunettes, chocolate or vanilla.....


I personally haven't had good luck with Holleys, so I run Edelbrocks on everything. For me, they are much easier to tune, and much more reliable. Your mileage may vary...

I would drop the performer intake and go with a LD340/LD4B or RPM airgap

holley. A good old fashion DP is all you need. Eddy's are ok for putting around in, but if it's going to see the track you'll need 2 to keep up w/ one holley.

I like both holley's and the eddies but i would go with the higher cfm carb 670 the other two will work great but must likily ruyn out of steam up top

An Edelbrock 600 would work just fine on that motor. If it was me I'd probably go even smaller than 600 on that motor.

Holley without question. For that motor and combination I would not go over 600CFM and keep it a vacuum secondary. Anything more than that is just wasted and is doing nothing for you.

I'd go with the 3310 holley 750 vac worked way better on my 318 than a 600 holley or a 600 eddie.

I think holley's are just a pain to tune in. I like my edelbrock 600 on my sbc 350 in my malibu. If anything, a barry grant beats holleys night and day. On that setup, you do not need a DP holley if you decide to go with a holley. DP should only be used really on the track, vacuum secondaries if your going to be driving more on the street.

I won't be specific, but I see some pretty bad advice here.

brand is not as much the question as size, in my opinion. Both Holley and Eddy make a great 600 cfm carb, and either would be a great choice. I'd choose a holley #80570: 570cfm street avenger series. A mild street 318 will not need any more than that, and it will run way crisper with better throttle response than with a bigger carb. A 750 on this application is just a classic over-carb. Would the 750 work? sure. but it would be a pig down low. You've got a nice small street performance package, The right carb is one that is in line with that goal.

I've run both on engines such as you describe...couldn't have been happier with either. Both are really good carbs.

Either are very tuneable...and can be made to get pretty good mileage.

First, DEFINITELY stick with a vacuum secondary...your satellite is a little on the heavy side, and the DP won't like heavy w/ a somewhat stockish torque converter...even though you've got decent rear gears.

I'd disagree that size is terribly important to an extent too...that's what's great about vacuum secondaries...too big a carb with vacuum secondaries, then the secondaries don't open all the way...only to what your engine is asking for.

That said, for a mild-ish 318, you can't beat a 600cfm. Heck, I used a 600 for a 360 that saw me into the lower 13's You'll get better mileage and throttle response with the appropriate sized carb.

In my opinion, you can probably tune an Eddy for better mileage than a holley, and you can probably tune a holley for better performance...but if you are hoping to avoid tuning, either is fine.

But since you are asking about the street avengers, you might be looking to tune at least a little, to which the holley is probably a bit easier for what you'll want to do. That said, eddy''s are pretty simple too.

Most who like one, stick with it...but myself, I'll go easily b/w each, no qualms about it. Heck, I've even been known to like a Quadrajet or two in my day lol.

To me, my guess is you'd probably be happiest with the holley street avenger 570. Check float level, set lean best idle, put in progressively lighter secondary springs until you get a hesitation/bog when flooring it, and then back up one spring size...and you're set. Easy, efficient, reliable and plenty quick.
