does anyone know if the 440 Source mini starter is any different in size/configuration from the standard 90's mopar/parts store mini starter or from the actual mopar part numbered mini? I have a set of doug's headers on a 383 and they hit the 440 source mini starter and even after some massaging with a big 'ford wrench'. I am trying to decide whether i should pull the starter and try either an old style or another style mini. Thanks everyone in advance.

Same as the factory mini. Actually I think it is the factory short mini not the long.

Allen Here's a novel idea, let's not throw a bunch of parts at the car hoping it will fix the problem and instead spend a little time diagnosing it first. Life was a little easier when I was just a wrench.

I have a MP mini starter (bought from Summit) and Dougs headers on my 512 (440) and everything fits fine.

I'm picking up a "mini starter" today form Advanced Auto. $79. I've used them in the past. It makes for an easier instal if you grind down on the case some. It takes about 20 seconds w/ a grinder to get it done.

Obviously a 440 is wider than a 383 making the starter touch even more on the 383. I have the Summit mini and it still touches on the outer most corner. I'm suprised it hasn't baked the starter yet.

Comparison between a stock mini and something like the Robbmc starter.

not here. It's more for bolt/wrench clearance. It's on the bottom of the case where the lower bolt mounts

Brandon made a bulk purchase of the Nippon-Denso mini-starters, good value. We put one on our 440.
Be sure to replace the shim as well..

Just my $0.01..

I have been pleased with my purchases from the source EXCEPT for the two mini starters I bought. Both have the same problem with not working until the engine cools. One is on a 496 stroker and one is on a basically stock 360 LA. The 360 is a drag car. The problem was so bad that I actually went back to the stock starter on it.

OH SNAP!! My source starter is doing the same thing. I was getting ready to change the battery cable, (4 gauge with battery in the trunk) and I wondered if some, part, all, of it might be the starter.

Anybody else experience heat soak with the source starter on a regular basis?

I had the same problem w/ an auto parts starter. Try and shield the starter some if you can. The Hooker super comps I have now don't seem to come as close so I hope I won't have the same issue. FWIW a hammer and a jack handle will fix the "no-start" issue.

I bought a 440Source starter about a year ago. It works fine, but I am sure it is not a Denso, does not look at all like it. I went to O'Reilly and bought a new "Optima" for $89 and it is the exact same, made in China starter as my Source starter.

Mine actually touched my hemi manifolds before I did a little grinding. Thought about trying to make a shield cause it's so close. Car's not running yet so thanks for the warning!

Can you please post a couple pics of the area that you had to grind down (before and after if possible) to get the starter to fit better?
With the heat problems, are these ceramic coated headers involved?

My big block has ceramic coated headers, and has major heat soak issues. The 360 had a heat shield with no success. It was so bad that the car would not crank in the staging lanes. Cranked fine when cold. No problem with the stock starter on the 360.

the new one I bought has a smaller top, not as much casing so I won't need to grind it. It was more to get a wrench on it easier not for fit.

If you have to grind it down to clear the header then the tubes are too close and will have heat soak issues, get another style starter.
