I'm planning on doing a vinyl top install this weekend on my 69 Bee. Have the top and a local source for the DAP adhesive.
I do have a couple of questions though, how much adhesive should be needed for this? The shop will sell it in any qty. needed.
Would a sprayer or brush be a better way to apply the adhesive? I have a small 2 oz detail gun but never sprayed an adhesive through it, is some sort of thinning necessary for this?
I'm using a Mopar Muscle article from a couple years back for reference but any pointers are appreciated!

Thanks,

Cole

Here is how the factory did it.

Thanks! I was about to PM you, the browser doesn't like the TIF's for whatever reason.

Have you replaced one?

No, but I need too. I have been told that it is all about the preparation and planning. Take your time and make sure you don't shortcut anything. I was told that it is best to wait for hotter weather and leave the vinyl out in the sun to soften up before installing.
I am sure one or more of the other members will chime in with advice.
Good luck with your project.

I would hold off on buying the DAP adhesive until someone with installation experience posts on the subject.

Alternative adhesive. 3M™ Yellow Super Trim Adhesive

Thanks again, I've done most of the prep work, the roof has been lightly scuffed and all the wrinkles are out of the new vinyl. I'll keep you posted and let you know what tricks I learn along the way! I'm not sure if it was the 3M adhesive but I read somewhere along the way that one of the trim adhesives has a relatively low temperature tolerance and will eventually cause loss of adhesion--hopefully somebody who's done it will chime in!

I did the one on my GTX using the 3M listed above. I should've had a helper but I didn't. Don't get the glue too heavy. Some of what I thought were air bubbles were just pockets of glue I had to squeeze out. My glass was out and I used pieces of tape where the seams were supposed to be, but I'm still a smidge off in the rear. Also, pulling too tight on the sides will cause the seams to ripple a little. Take your time, measure twice, CUT once, etc...

I did a top on my old '69 Dart, but I am planning to install an NOS Gatorgrain top on my Superbee this spring. I did the Dart without help, this time I'll get a pair of extra hands. Not sure about DAP adhesive, I like the 3M product. It sprays out nice and even. As has been suggested already a warm day makes the top softer and easier to work with.

When using the 3M spray, how many cans did you end up using?
(assuming the 24oz spray is the only size)

That Gator Grain is going to look great on your Bee!

Thanks,
Cole

Oh man good question. I remember having more than one can but I don't recall if it took more than two. It's not a cheep material either so you don't want to buy too much more than you need.
Been working on my Bee for seven years, still more work to do but I think it's now safe to put the top on. Can't wait to do it actually.

If you can buy it locally, I would pick up 2 more cans than you think you will need and return the unused cans you don't use. It's better to have a few cans more, than be 1 can short.

I think 2 cans will be plenty for one top.

Yeah I've had mine for the same amount of time...college came and went and now I have much more time to work on it again!
I will definitely post pics as well. I'll snag 2 cans to start with and see what happens.

Thanks for all the input!

Cole

I saw a tip somewhere to buy 4 cans. You will only use 2 but if you have one clog, you will be watching the swamp rise and aligators nip while you futz with the failed can.
