What has to be done to a (440 automatic) crank in order to make it 4 speed compatible?
Thanks,
Mike

It needs to be drilled out to accept a bushing or bearing like this:
Drilling may can be necessary but many auto cranks were set up for a 4 speed at the factory. Is it a BB or a SB? Can you post a picture of the end of the crank - that would help tell. Another option is to use a bearing that fits into the torque convertor pilot and shorten (if necessary) the transmission input shaft.

Sorry, i forgot to mention that it's a 440 from a 68 imperial. The motor has already been rebuilt and i wanted to keep my 64 a pushbutton auto, but i started playing with the idea of making it a 4 speed. I heard that drilling was necessary but was hoping it was not so involved.

You can always cut the input shaft.

There's a good chance it is already set up for 4 speed - may even have the bronze bushing in place dirty but unworn.
They can be setup for an auto and manual together?

I pulled a 383 from a 68 Newport years ago...original engine. Went to put a bushing into it for my roadrunner and there was already one there...dirty and unused, but there.
Yours stands alot more chance of beeing drilled being a 68 than if it was a later 70's unit, in my experience. If it's drilled to depth and not finish drilled to size (and many were this way) an SKF B287 fits into the torque converter register and takes care of the bushing issue for you.
As previously mentioned, circumcise the input if you have to.

thats the first step , now the question is it it reamed to size ?
the plus is you shouldn't have to cut the input shaft if its not fully reamed to size , just use the pilot bushing setup that goes in the convertor register
