pinion nut on my 742 case 3.91 suregrip came loose. Now when i tighten the pionion nut i can not spin the wheels . The 742 uses shims, so shouldnt i be able to tighten that pretty tight with an air gun and it still spin freely?

Are trying to turn the tires or the yoke? If you have a good sure grip turning just the tires by hand can take some effort.

I was turning just the tires. The suregrip is deffiently good as the two black stripes i left for 200ft after i tighten the nut proved

So you think it has to come apart? I've had this unit in my car for 5 years and just recently the nut came loose and i had a humming noise on decell.

To fix it right it needs to come out.
The preload on the pinion bearings has to be set
without the posi in the case. It seems like you
need another shim behind the front bearing.
You need to inspect the ring-pinion and pinion
bearings. When you tighten the yoke, do it in steps-while turning the pinion, DON'T use an
air gun.
