Hi Gentlemen,
I need to replace the seal in my axle at the passenger side as i'm getting oil into the brake drum.

I realize i need to set the end float at this side of the axle when doing this job.
I have a dial gauge and magnetic stand which i'm ok to use.
If i'm reading the manual ok i think i need to set up the bearing with between .005 and .012 lash.
Would you guys agree with this?
Any other tips please?
This is the first time i've been inside my axle.
Many Thanks
Simon

P.S.
Just to make you guys feel good about driving a 'gas guzzlin' V8....Petrol(gas)Is now £1.20 a litre in the uk

Assuming it's an 8.75" you are working on...

I would adjust the axle end play using the method in the tech section. It works great and requires no special tools or dial indicator.

Make sure you drive the new seal all the way till it bottoms, it sits deep in the axle tube. This requires a seal driver or correct diameter pipe to get to the bottom without risking ruining the new seal. Buy an extra seal in case you bend the 1st.

Also, don't forget to repack the wheel bearing with grease. Most likely the 90w washed all the grease out of it. John

Just don`t move the adjuster while changing the seal and the setting won`t change. Watch out for the thrust button falling out if it`s a power lock.

Aye Simon it looks like I get to bone up on the Kings' English today . Measure the depth of the old seal then drive the new one in to that depth and pack some vaseline around the spring on the back side so it wont pop out. Smear a light coat of your gasket cement on the housing ID where the seal will reside at, rather than coating the seal OD itself as it will get wiped off as it travels toward it's seat plus you dont want any on the bearing. Get the seal started straight w easy whacks then whack it in to the right depth w as few strokes as possible and have something circular on the seal as a driver that has an OD AT LEAST midway of the OD of the seal. Wrap the splines w a piece of brown grocery bag and when the splined end is inserted past the seal then pull the paper out so the splines do not contact your new seal. I'd set end play on the low side (.005") .010" max. As said clean/blowdry/repack the bearings. And I swear by taking off a holddown and a return spring and taking off a shoe and the horizontle ebrake lever for EASE of axle R&R (trust me on that one)

That is the way that I do it. Just enough play to be able to feel it.

Hi,
This job is now completed and ok.
Many Thanks to all you guys who gave your help.
I did use a dial gauge,and got .008 lash.
I also made a tool to knock the seal in from some pipe fittings i 'borrowed' from work.
Best Wishes
Simon
