well i been meesing with my electrical gremlin lately and ive gotten power to my ballast. in the mid elevens for power.but my coil has only 2.8 what would cause this?

If you have 11's coming out of the ballast it should still be 11's when it gets to the coil. I would assume the wire ( ballast to coil) is broken and or cooked. It is 37 years old

run a test wire straight from the ballast to the + on the coil minimum 12

He said he's got 11s to the ballast resistor, not coming out of it. Voltage coming out of resistor should be lower since it is after all going through a resistor.

mid 11 volts to the Ballast/2.8 @coil as said if the wire/connections from the ballast "out" downstream to the coil positive are good then the ballast is bad/dropping the voltage too much but I've got a feeling that isn't the case

Mid 11 volts to the Ballast/2.8 at the coil.

As said, if the wire/connections from the ballast "out" downstream to the coil positive are good, then the ballast is bad/dropping the voltage too much.

I've got a feeling that isn't the case.

If you've got a DVOM (digital volt ohm meter), you can pull both connections from the ballast resistor and meter it for resistance. Let us know what you've got. 11v at the front of the ballast, but what is your actual battery voltage? They should be the same. If not, you're dropping voltage somewhere. Points or electronic?

It may not be related to your problem at all, but when I first put mine back together I had to re-do some wiring under the hood because someone just cut the harness when they sold the original motor out of it. It would fire up, then barely run at all above an idle- Eventually figured out all it was I had the wiring hooked up wrong to the resistor...had them switched

Eric w your voltmeter w it at a fast idle put the neg lead on the batt neg post and start checking voltages at every point starting at the battery positive post then to the starter relay then stick a thin probe into the bulkhead terminal & check it's voltage then on the other side of the bulkhead "out" to the ballast, check both sides then see what you have at the coil positive and if it's 2.8V it would not be firing.

Brain fart but 9 volts out after it is resisted down. But on start ballast is by passed to 12V so it should start then quit??

and I cant see it being 2.8V on the run side so that makes me think something is being missed

It sounds like a faulty connection to me. The best way to test is not using the ohm meter function of the DVOM. Using the ohm meter will not tell you if the circuit fails under higher amperage load. Use the voltmeter. Start with one lead attached to the positive battery post. Use the other lead to probe the positive circuit from the battery through the fire wall bulkhead, then the ignition switch, though the bulkhead again to the ballast resistor then the coil. Since you are probing positive to positive you should get a zero volt reading. Any reading on the meter shows how much was lost at that individual connection. Test the entire ignition feed circuit and I bet you find a individual or multiple connections with high voltage drop. Repair them as needed. Good luck.

I was suggesting to check the ballast resistor with the Ohm aspect of the meter.

sorry for the long reply. i kinda put my car to the side its been making me so mad. and im just trying to get school done. but now i fifnished what i needed to do.

so back to the point i think i may try to run a wire from the ballast straight to the coil.
