Trial and error. Bring up number 1 cyl, drop in the gear and drop in dizzy. Check where number 1 should be on your cap. If off pull dizzy pull and move gear a bit and do it again till it lines up.

Thanks but i dont want to spin it in ever slot with screw driver.

I think , it is inline with 1st intake bolt.

std SB is point the slot toward the front dr side intake manifold bolt which'll clock the rotor a bit toward the pass side to maintain the factory plug wiring diagram which makes for less plug wire clutter. I'm assuming your plug wiring order is set where you want it ( OE #1 cap terminal is forward/slightly toward the pass side. You might go further & check phasing & set the timing marks where you plan on running your initial for example 10BTDC then clock the inter shaft so w the dist housing/vac adv can roughly where it clears the coil and gives you room to move it both ways and w the reluctor blade JUST moving away from the magnet slot that the rotor is as close as possible to the underside of the cap terminal w the #1 plug wire on it keeping in mind that phasing (if vac adv is used) will shift the rotor firing point CCW from where it is now.

My memory was correct . Thanks for responding.

You do not want to trial and error this. That gear mates the distributor timming and crank timming. Can not be willy nilly. You will hear crash, boom, bang, and see fire.

You can put it wherever you want it as long as the firing order coming out the cap is correct rotor pointing to the correct tower at #1 at TDC compression stroke.

The distributor/int shaft have no clue how they are oriented.

You could install the int shaft 90* from where the FSM says and get it to run just as well as if you put it in per the fsm..

I orient the gear to best position the vacumm advance cannister.

Then I compensate accordingly

True. I've had the vacuum canister hit the intake or the firewall limiting the timing changes. It's not hard to move the gear drive shaft. Put a large straight blade screwdriver in and turn it. One direction the gear will ride up the cam gear until it drops in the next slot. The other direction won't move at all. Easier than the Shivy/Phord engines with the gear on the distributor and trying to engage the hex shaft and get everything lined up together.

Like said any position will ork fine but for uniformity sake the factory positioned the slot paralel with the engine center line.

didn't want to mislead the slot can GO anyway. the cap was off and just needed it snapped back on after priming.
