Let see if I can help you on this descesion, I have several motors that have been ran in my 3400 lb street, pump gas Duster. The first motor was a 512 low deck with 906 heads like yours, 9.25 to 1 comp ratio, with a six pak intake set up,Comp Cams solid roller cam, it ran 10:69 at 123 MPH with the iron heads. I switch heads (same compression ratio, 84 CC heads on both)to a set of Eddy RPM CNC ported by MCH, the car ran 10:49 at 128.5 MPH. The second motor is 446 C.I. 440 block with the same 906 heads off of the stroker, 9.46 to compression, Eddy RPM Performer intake,Holley 950 HP carb. Comp Cams XE284HL cam. This motor ran 11:30 at 119 MPH. Either way will pick the car up, I would do the stroker kit, 4.25 stroke or larger Make it pump gas freindly, unless you have unlimited access to E85

I'd go heads, that's where the power will be. displacement will just give you what RPM the powerband will be, everything else being equal.

My opinion is to do the stroker kit now, put the engine in then later all you need to do is through the heads at it... no more pulling the engine

Lot of people would be disappointed in thinking the 440 vs 500 is big gains given the same other parts and topend. The 3.75 stroke will get it done with the correct heads. Stock heads ported heads even pro done will usually make a great tow motor with a long arm.... In a nut shell you would be narrowing the power band, which IMO is counter productive in a racey type build. Fact is the two same engines will have similar power outputs given the same parts in this type motor. Well the stroker might make a little more mid range, but suffer from topend Asama for breathing with stock heads.

also, Look at the power Wild Bill is making (700+) with a 440, smallish solid cam, and Eddy heads! get the heads first!

From your original post I gather you have stock rods and stock crank. I would make sure I had the bottom end built to handle the rpm your gonna turn with the better breathing heads or it could get real expensive especially if you step up on cam to take advantage of the better flowing heads.
Good luck!
I agree. You want to build a solid foundation first, leave the heads till later due to them being crack prone. If that happens, you aren't out much. If you go heads first, your choice of gears and converter will probably be different. So you save there. Basically, the low end torque of the stroker will be close between the iron heads and the aluminum heads. The shift point will rise and the hp will go up. Also, you will have an animal on the street with the extra cubes, even with iron heads. In the end, stroker Vs stock the stroker will be faster with either heads.

I done both when I did my current mill.Just remember all of the costs when stepping into a basic EZ head It wont end with "just heads" whoever sets your heads up(do not just buy them from Indy and bolt them on)will recommend a valvetrain and cam setup when you decide which heads you want.I would stay with the top end you have and get that heavy, old rod and piston set, possibly cracked crank, and get a good base for your new heads for next season Gus

Lots of great advise... any others opinions out there? Thanks guys.
One other option- put it together with what you have, and have fun, meanwhile advertising it for sale and collecting the right parts for what you want. Personally, I favor the lowdeck combos, even for the street. a well done pumpgas 512 can put out very serious power, and be lighter than a 440 block motor. Also, any headers that will fit an iron head 440 combo will fit on a 400 based- raised exhaust port head combo, like a 440-1 head on a 400 block.
