My auto column shifter on a 70 383/727 RR is off by one.In other words sometimes reverse will be neutral, nuetral is drive, drive is low2 and so on.When I put in park it wont start, until I shift down. When I pull the shifter all the way down to low and back up to park it sometimes goes back to normal, but eventually starts over.I'm hoping it's just a linkage adjustment.Car is new to me as well as mopars,so I'm not as familiar with them.Thanks.

It's real easy to adjust the shifter linkage. Just unhook the shifter linkage at the transmission gear selector, put the car in park or first adjust linkage up until it slips in the gear selector and your done.

You can look the linkage over for extra slop, and add washers if needed too.

He is right. It's an easy fix. But if it used to work right and now it acts funny. Something went wrong.

If you recently R&R'd the transmission, engine, or linkage pieces the adjustment is normal.

If not check the bushings at the ends of the cross shaft and the shift levers for wear or broken pieces. The cross shaft bushings are still available from Mopar and probably other places.

If the bushings are OK check the engine and transmission mounts.

I have never found that problem occur without some kind of recent repair that alters the adjustment or wear worn out parts.

I've only had the car a couple of days, but the previous owner said he only had this happen once when the car was at an incline.

sounds like the previous owner might have fibbed a little just to unload something he could not or would not fix. It happens. You should have no issues fixing your linkage.

It may be a bad motor or transmission mount if parking on an incline can cause it. Those going bad will cause the engine to shift under load.

It's still an easy fix but I would put it up on Stands and inspect the mounts and the shift bushings.

OK,it was an easy fix the linkage bolt was loose.Everything is lined up correctly now,but after a couple of days I noticed it doesn't start in park all the time.Today it started in park but moved forward,by the end of the day it will only start in neutral. Is it the neutral safety switch and if so where is it in theses B body cars?

Still in the linkage ajustment. It is picky so give it another shot.

Are you sure? I was thinking NSS because of the jerking forward in park?

The neutral saftey switch is controled by a cockscomb on the lever in the trans. If it works in neutral it should work in park. Park is a more sentive adjustment then neutral. If it's jerking forward in park then you have an internal trans problem. The NSS is just a push button and does nothing but ground the start circuit.
