Im gunna be pulling the heads off my 408 in the near future while im doing a cam swap.I am going to home port them and gasket match them as well as the Victor intake.I have ported sum Chevy heads both big and small block years ago with good results.I have never done this on a Mopar though (mainly because this is the 1st one i have owned). Its a race only deal ,so im after all i can get.Can someone please tell me the areas to concentrate on and the areas to stay away from.I know it would be better to have them done by a Pro and flowed as well ,but i want to do it myself.I actually find this kind of stuff rewarding and time is no object on it.They are Econo W2 heads and i believe they are the early variety (70's).The cam is gunna be a solid and the motor will see about 6500rpm tops naturally aspirated .Before and after pics would be great if you have them .Thanks in advance ...

They say stay away from the short-turn if you're not a pro.
There are some good posts here on the subject by OU812 and S/ST3040.(others too) Spend some time doing searches: it should pay off.

Yeah, it's got a smallblock.

I didn't think anybody paid any attention to me.

I understand the bowls are thin on the early 810 casings, (freeze pugs)
even though I've never ground through one.

If it is an early head, they have really small ports. Make them bigger.
You have to work on the short turn, I don't care who said what.
It's all in the shape. I can't really explain that and it's almost
impossible to get "right" without numerous trips to the flow bench.

Just watch grinding too much, here.......on the straight wall side.
Good luck.

The intakes flowed around 320 cfm @ .700" if I remember right. I think RyanJs flowed close to these. Here is an exhaust pic.

There might be some air in the chamber and valve job...

yes there is more air flow and power in a properly shaped chamber and design and shapes of angles cut into the seats. if you have the chambers and the intake runners to smooth air flow will in a gas powered motor, because the air and fuel seperate and the fuel begins to puddle. a way to tell if you intake manifold is shaped and texture is make a pass or dyno the engine and pull the carb off the manifold and look inside to see if there is fuel stains on the plenum floor. if is the the manifold isn`t ported right and it`s way to smooth. the fuel stain shld be in the roof of the manifold right were the carb pad and runner begins. this is for wedge type motors, there high pressure area is in the roof, but a hemi`s high pressure is in the floor. thats because of the segin of the chamber. what im tryin to say is that dont take a 120 grit sand paper roll to the intake runners or chamber. that is way to smooth for a gas powered car. use a 60 grit roll. if it was a deisel then use 180 on the intake, the fuel is added after the valve. i hope this helped you.

Thats exactly the kind of info im after right there.I always thought that a "glass" type finish was ideal ,but i guess not.So finish out with a 60 grit roll ,got it ...
