The recent cam question thread has really piked my interest about the lunati cam

lunati 60303 .226*int/.234*ex .494int/.513ex

I am in the middle of my dilemma with where to go with my 71 roadrunner.

I have access to a 9:1 compression 440, but my car currently has a fresh 10,000 mile 383 which has had quite a bit of work done to it. I don't want to mess with exhaust systems again!

Anyway, how would this cam work in a 383? This is a big car and it needs the power. I noticed quite a difference from the 440 it used to have when I went with the 383 (but thats another long story ).

383 motor, bored .30 over with 440 rods, ross pistons (approx 9.1:1 compression), 452 heads with mild pocket port done, FBO mechanical advance distributor, currently* 750 edelbrock carb. Automatic 727, 2300 stall converter, 3:55 sure grip rear.

This lunati cam seems to be very popular from what I have read. What are some real world quarter mile numbers and street experience with this cam?

I am driving myself crazy with my car "what if" scenarios. I need the weather get warm so I can at least go mow that lawn or something!!!

Thanks!

I run the next one up the 513/533 in my 440. Stock 906 heads stock HP manifolds mopar electronic with chrome box eddy performer intake with eddy 800 thunder series carb. 28 to 3200 stall with 3:55 gears. Sweet cam. Great street manners makes tons of low end power.Pulls hard to 6200 rpm. Still makes enough vac for my power breakes. The Voodoo cams are excellent. The 603 would be a nice cam in the 383. But i think with the bore and 440 rods you'd like the 604

I guess I should specify....

When I originally built this 383 I put inthe Comp cams XE284H cam 507/510 lift 284/296 duration.

This was before I had headers...needless to say it was way overcammed and was a complete turd.

I quickly detuned the cam because I was so disappointed in it. I currently have the comp XE262H 462/470 lift 262/270 duration. I think I went a little TOO conservative because of my bad experience with overcamming, but it runs great now. I still wish it would pull a little harder on the street.

I guess what I am saying is that I am little leery of just going to a bigger cam again. The profile of these cams are in the same neighborhood of the cam that caused me problems before..

I may not be sold yet, but......
but I am still listening

if those duration numbers are @50 lift there is your problem. way to long a duration. Run the Lunarti you will not be disapointed

I have since learned a lot about this stuff. I was only 19 and pretty naive. Now I am 29 and just an idiot

I am leaning towards the lunati. I currently have comp flat tappet hydraulic lifters. Could I just buy the cam and run these lifters?

Has anyone on this board used these cams in a B motor? Anyone have 1/4 mile times with their combos? Thanks again!

The Lunarti kit is really afordable. I wouldn't use a set of different lifters. I also wouldn't use used lifters with a new cam. I run the 513/533 and love the cam. Car is like night and day. Ton of torque and low end power. Pulls hard to 6200 RPM. Very tame idle, plenty of vac for power brakes. The 513/533 likes a bit more stall then you mentioned and at least an 800 CFM carb. But i think the 603 would work well with your set up as it is. Summit has a good price on the cam and lifter package.

Call lunati tell them what you've got and see what cam they tell you works best. I think since you've thrown in the 440 rods it will work great. You dont have alot of compression so keep cylinder pressure in mind.

What compression is best with this cam? or does it really matter?

I also looked at the cam one size smaller 60302, but it doesn't look as promising as the one we are currently talking about.

I'll have to do some more homework!

Plus, I hate to get too involved with my idea just yet. then I think....

Well, I could pull the motor, get a little better converter just to be sure, take heads off and get springs to match the cam, then while it's out.......

you know how the story goes

thanks

60302 isn't enough of a difference from your XE262 to switch.

the 60303 probably will give you ~20 more HP, but you might lose 15-20 lb-ft of torque off idle.
