i have a 95 dakota with a 42RH transmission, and the dipstick tube leaks where it goes into the case,i checked with my cute parts girl at the local dealer, she said it takes a sorta sleeve type seal,so i have her order me two,i get the dipstick tube out and it takes a 'o' ring, she double and triple checks her computer and the sleeve is supposed to fit,no updated tube, its supposed to fit the tube i have,i recall some GM trannnys had a sleeve type seal and the tube was tapered to accept them, not so here, anyone else have this problem?,id rather not use a 'o' ring as ive had problems with them leaking

mopar dip stick tubes have taken an o ring for about a 1000 years. put a new one in and it will stop leaking.

First, be sure the leak is at the O ring; the tube is beaded inward to accept the O ring and the tube often cracks at the bead. If the O ring is the leak source, a little RTV around the O ring before installation helps the seal.

i inspected the tube closer and it has a deeper groove one one side than the other, looks like it might have been bent slightly and not letting the O ring seat correctly,so its either new tube time,or cut and weld a new bottom end on it

Gobs of RTV will seal it even with no O ring, just be sure the fluid level is well below the tube and both surfaces clean.

i know they can be sealed with RTV and ive done that and seen them leak later on,im gonna go for a new tube if i can get one that uses the new sleeve seal,if not i might weld the end of a gm sleeve type on my tube, can i weld a drain plug in the 42RH pan?,if so where?i considered drilling a hole in it on the truck, but my luck id drill into the VB,i want to use the mopar resueable gasket, they CLAIM that it dont leak?

Fix it for good with the "Boot Type" seal. Cut 1 1/2 inches off the bottom of the tube, spread a little silicone inside this repair end and jam it on there! http://www.transmissionpartsusa.com/Transmission_dipstick_tube_repair_p/002-0000t9999.htm

I think it's 96 or 98, they switched to the boot type seal. it uses a different dipstick tube with a sweged end reduced to about 5/8" OD. I modded a '98 dakota dipstick tube to fit my M body because I was tired of leaks with the O-rings..
