I have a Summit cam and lifters in a fresh 440 and I haven't taken the intake off yet, but I have some serious lifter noise and then it goes away. I'm wonder how hard it is to see if I can fix the lifters.

Regular hydraulic cam.....and if the lifters are wearing correctly with the lobe then I really don't want to change them out if I don't have too.

But it's noisy enough that it is embarrassing.

I haven't every taken lifters apart so I'm interested in knowing what to look for to see if I can fix them.

I'd take em apart, solvent clean them, blow dry, oil them and reassemble keeping everything in order especially as you know lobe/lifter order. I had a 80's /6 w hyd lifters that would get noisy for awhile then get quiet. Psi was good. I just assumed there was a piece of grit in one of them that would move around in the lifter and hang it up on occaision. It was obnoxious but I just tolerated it (a work truck) but I wouldn't in a daily driver

If you want to find what lifters are noisy it is very simple but messy. Remove 1 valve cover and start the engine, with a hammer handle put pressure on the push rod end of the rocker arm. The lifter noise will subside. now do the other side. I have seen where this actually takes care of the problem by pressure bleeding the lifter down. The least it will do is locate the bad guys.

As the OP stated wooden handle check works well. So that its not as messy use some 2 1/2" masking tape and run it around the bottom of the head after you have the valve cover off. This will build a temporary dam keeping the oil off of your exhaust. Drop a shop towel on the manifold side to catch the "flying oil" as it comes off the rockers.
