You have to be sure if its the column or gear box.

My 71 chally does the same thing. The inside of the steering column pulls in and out about 3/8ths of an inch. When it is in, it bindes up, when you pull it out it turns smooth. There is a bad bushing or bearing some where, but I am not sure what parts it needs or if you can even still get parts for it. I've been waiting for a used column to pass my path.

I was going to make sure that I had access to a spair steering column before I rip into mine. That way when I get into it, if I can't get parts, or just can't figure it out, I can get it back on the road right away, with the spair column. I can't be without my wheels. If you do figure out what it takes, I would be interested in the info.

Had that problem before. You may need to adjust the 3 bolt pattern mount that is at the base of the column, and retains it to the floor. If the steering shaft is not centered in it, it will bind. Another possibility, is the bearing at the top of the column. You would have to pull the steering wheel to get down to it. I suspect the adjustment on the column first though.

I just fixed mine today. Mine was missing the snap ring that is on the center shaft, under the crush can. That keeps the can held up, and away, from rubbing and binding on the outer column when turning. A 59 cent fix, you cant beat that. Now it steers free and easy, with no binding.

Two votes for this fix.

It's not as serious as it sounds to fix.
