Hey all,
So today I'm trying to start my car after a complete fuel system swap. New tank, lines, pump, filter.
I've started the car about 5 times pouring gas in the carb, it runs for about 5 seconds and dies, of course, but I thought this would be enough to get new fuel from the tank. I put about 3 gallons in earlier today. I've cranked it many more times than that, thinking that would prime the system, but there's still no fuel showing up in the clear filter. I don't see anything leaking.
What the heck? Does this just take way longer than I thought to pull fuel through the new empty line? Or do I have a worse problem? (Like a bad new fuel pump),
Thanks for any help.

Yes. hold a small funnel in the air connected to the carb inlet w your left hand and a SMALL container of gas (several ounces) in your right hand to replenish the funnel and run the pump output (that you disconnected) to a container and HAVE A HELPER start it & holler to him to kill it when it starts to flow into the container.
Hmmm - that makes sense. Considering that all the air in the lines would need to somehow be pushed out through the carb otherwise.
Thank you!

I took the line loose from the pump and blew compressed air in to the tank to get fuel running out of the end of the line. Blow gun and shop rags in the filler neck. It won't take much pressure to get the fuel flowing.
Done that many times. Also works to get fuel out of the tank with no engine in the car.

I had the same trouble years ago. Prime the carb runs quits crank crank crank still nothing. well after putting 10 gallons in the tank and the same problem I looked inder the car turns out that the rear fuel line had cracks in it. I was sucking air. 10 min later and a new line car fired right up.
except he said it was a total fuel system swap...tank, lines, etc.
try to get fuel to come out of the line by the pump first, to ensure you don't have a fuel line kinked or pinched shut somewhere.
if that doesn't work, check the diaphragm in the pump. DO NOT BLOW PRESSURIZED AIR THROUGH THE PUMP, that diaphragm is only meant for fuel pressure levels, and a 90psi shot of air could very well cause it to blow, then your pump won't pump fuel at all!
check the floats in the carb? they're not set so low that the needle/seat are "closed" are they?

Stop pouring fuel down the carburetor throat. Your rings and walls will not be happy about that. Use a squirt bottle and fill the front carburetor bowl. The engine will also run much longer than raw fuel puddled in the intake.
I like compressed air with shop rags in the tank idea that was mentioned.
