I just installed a Edelbrock Performer RPM on the 383 in my 68 Coronet. I have been using the MP air cleaner with the old setup but the new intake is taller and pushes the air cleaner assembly into the hood. Does anyone make a drop base for this air cleaner? I know it's a [Edited by Moparts - Family Friendly Site - Keep it clean] size. I hate to get rid of it because it matches the valve covers but I need an air cleaner. Any suggestions?

J

My brother's got a cheapie edelbrock drop base on his. You could buy one and if it's a different diameter from the bottom to the top lid you could cut out the bottom of the rpm piece and mate it to the bottom of your mopar air cleaner to have the best of both.

I think Ford Motorsports makes a drop base in the correct diameter.

I had the same problem and could not find a proper drop base for the MP cover. Let us know what you find please...

I've heard that too. It would be nice if I could buy just the drop base, as I've heard that the entire assembly is 60.00...

I'm running the MP air cleaner. It doesn't hit the hood, but it interferes with my underhood insulation pad.

Anybody know where I could get just the base, and what the Ford part # might be?

Teh Ford Racing unit is 13" and the Mopar unit is 12.75. Close enoguht to lie about I guess. I may have to see if I can find one at a swap meet somewhere. Probably just have to throw a standard 14" on for now. Might try to modify a 14" drop base to fit if I can find one at the right price. Thanks guys.

I had the same problem with the 440 in my Charger. took a cheapie chrome base and my MP base to a local guy and had him mate the two. The MP is an oddball size. WHY? More NON user friendly crap for us mopar guys to have to deal with! The $ 60 air cleaner assembly cost me another $ 80 to get it to look right and BARELY clear the stock 70 Charger hood. How many other guys out there have CUSTOM fitted parts that cost over double to get to function properly?

Yes it does work. Go to jegs, it is the $60 one part number 301 or 302 or something like that.

It works using the ford base w/ the mopar top, but not the other way around, the 13 filter is too big for the mopar 12.75 base...

I have found a size that fits and is 3.5 inches tall. Wix part number 42043 it is also a heck of alot cheaper than the MP replacement I payed $7 compared to the almost $40 the Stealer wanted for a MP one. And it looks a hell of a lot better than the short one that came with the air cleaner.

Don't know why a dealer would even try to sell P2863349 air filter element at any price, because it's not available (component only).

Without the P, (just 2863349), it's 12.25 retail but has been discontinued because the last model year it was used in is 1969. There are, amazingly, a few dealers who still have it but not many.

Any of these will work fine and are dirt cheap:

WIX Part # 42044
FRAM Part # CA305
FRAM Part # CA305V

As far as:

"The MP is an oddball size. WHY? More NON user friendly crap for us mopar guys to have to deal with! "

The same baseplate is used for both the unsilenced and the black finned MP air cleaner. That air cleaner baselate was stamped from original tooling used on 1969 340 darts, 1969 383 road runners w/o air grabber, etc. It's a stock air cleaner base and it uses a stock air cleaner element.

It's an oddball size because Mopars used oddball sizes in 1969.

GM used 14" which the rest of the aftermarket defaulted to, just like they defaulted to GM dimensions on almost everything else.

P5249011 is the current part number for the filter for cast aluminum air cleaners and they are still out there

Dealer screen says depots have the following stock:

NAT 0 NAT 0
WAR 0 MSV 0
SHR 0 MLW 0
NAT 0 NAT 0
NAT 0 NAT 0
NAT 0 NAT 0
NAT 0 NAT 0

Locator says:
No dealers located for the search criteria

And on top of that the part it's discontinued, ns3.

Not trying to stir anything up, you say you found one and I believe you but most folks are not going to find one if they look for one within Chrysler. For $40, there are better choices for sure.

Personally I gave up on a "Mopar look" air cleaner long ago when I started using tall intake manifolds etc, so I just use a 14" K&N on almost everything.

Just use a shorter air filter.
