Hello, i have a couple questions about the 3 & 4 Speed Manual Transmissions. A Smallblock A-Body with a 3 Speed Manual has the same body hump, bellhousing and tailshaft like the 4-Speed cars, right ? Or are the parts different to the 4 Speed cars ? If i would swap the 3-speed to a 4-speed, i can use the tailshaft from the 3-speed, right ? Is for a smallblock A-Body, a manual 4-speed trans with iron housing or a trans with aluminium housing better ? The aluminium housing would be better i think because the reduced weight from the trans. Or is a iron housing better, because its stronger like the aluminium housing. Thanks for answering my questions. Greets from Germany

All you need to do is go to www.bigblockdart.com they have all the information you may need. The hump and and crossmember are the same, the shifter, clutch linkage, bell, and tailshaft are different as far as I know. Gus

You can change over from a 3-4spd no problem you will need a new Yoke as 3 spd is different from the 4 spd
So and A-body 3-speed's (A-230?) output shaft is the larger size (same as a 727's)?

A/F short A230 has small spline like 904 and long tailshaft B/E/Truck has 30-spline output like 727. And about an A230 tailhousing bolting to an A833, it not even close to to the same bolt pattern. Also the A230 uses 3/8" bolts where the A833 uses 7/16" bolts for the tailhousing to main case bolts.

I just pulled a 3 speed. Mine was column shift. Slip yoke no worky with the 833OD.
If you need a 4 speed hump get an original for ease of installation.
Nobody will tell you that the repop ones are for 75 and 76 Abodies. Extra metal work will be required!
My clutch linkage works just fine. Mine is a slant!

Depends.
Early A bodies had a unique bellhousing for the htree speed and the four speed, they will not swap. Later A's had a common three and four speed bellhousing, will swap. If it's the later A then the clutch linkage swaps too.
I believe the humps are the same, if both are floor shifters obviously.

67 and up are generaly the late A's, but hte commonality of bellhousing patterns started later than that, I am not exactly sure when, I want to say 1970, but basically if it's aluminum it has both patterns.
