Hey all, about a month ago I purchased a complete 440, from intake to pan its a 77 block. It came with a Performer 440 and a 750 eddy. Well I took the heads off and took it to my local machine shop and the previous owner had changed the pistons but left it same bore. Cylinder walls look ok but you can feel the wear on the top where the ring goes up to.

So the owner told me I can run it the way it is or just spend a few more dollars and get it freshened up and get my desired CR. So here is what I am working with. Looking for about 9.5:1 -10:1 CR.

1977 440 Block will be .30 over
stock crank(has forged damper but not sure if crank is)
906 heads that have been ported and polished multi angle valve job, hardened seats and cut to 82cc with .575 max lift on springs.
Cam (Not sure, but I want to take the most advantage of heads and CR)
Pistons( Need to know which would be the best for my Application, I am not looking to go forged but I was looking at the KB237's)
Carb ( I am thinking of a Holley Double Pumper 800-850CFM
intake- I will be running a Holley Street Dominator
head gaskets ( Not sure, I need help with this too)

I also have a Melling High Volume oil pump, Holley red electric fuel pump. As for rockers, can I use stockers? i don't want to spend 500$ on harland sharp or comp magnums. I saw the Crane golds at a good price over at summit but do I need to buy new shafts and all? Stock push rods a swell? Feel free to change things up, give me all the input you got. Thx! guys!

I would mill the open chamber recesses to equalize them (the depth/slope can vary) along w some quench pad KB's to get .040" quench along w your desired CR which will in all likelyhood let your get by w 93 pump gas

Your build will be almost the same as my 440. I have a .030 over 440 with stock crank and rods. KB quench pad pistons that I set at .042 quench with my 906 heads I ported. It comes out to 10.0 comp and it runs fine on 92 pump with 38 total timing. It has the MP .557 cam and I use Isky ductile iron adjustable rockers. I also run the Holley Street Dominator with an 850 DP. I have the Holley red pump back by the tank and thats the only pump I use. It runs mid 11's in my 3700 lb 63 Sport Fury with a best of 11.49. Sounds like a nice solid combo. Ron

Hey guys thanks for the reply's!

383man, thanks much for sharing your combo. sounds like awesome running 440. Anyways If you can give me your suggestions because I am a complete Noob when it comes to building an engine, this is going to be my very first tear down of an engine. I have done a Heads and Cam upgrade on an LS1 but that about it. So I am trying to get the correct parts before I order.

So so far I have these Rings and Pistons.

What about rod bolts? Should I upgrade to ARP's? I have found these.

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/ARP-145-6002/

What about head gasket? I bought a complete 440 felpro gasket kit off summit for 55 bucks it comes with head gasket but not sure if they will be correct for my setup.

As for push rods would you recommend me to upgrade or should I use same ones?

I would really appreciate the help from you or any one else!

Thx, Roy.

I'll add some comments on valvetrain and head gasket. Stock style HD rockers are considered good up to about .5" valve lift. With a Comp "extreme energy" hydraulic cam either the 274 or 284 duration cam would work. The 274 would be more street friendly. Springs may need to be upgraded to match the cam depending on what's there now. Or choose something similar from another manufacturer. When you are done milling and fitting, the stock pushrods probably won't be the right length. Stock rockers with custom length pushrods to dial in the "lifter pre-load" would be an effective low cost approach. Your machine shop can probably mock up your combo and measure pushrod length. The felpro head gasket should be OK... check fitup to make sure the fire ring doesn't hang over the bore and make sure you know the thickness and dial that into your quench, pushrod length and compression calculations.

Right now I have stock rockers, but I think I will purchase some isky iron adjustables if I can find some or I will save up for some crane golds. I do have the felpro 8519PTI gasket 4.450 bore and .038 thickness. So If I get the block close to .003 deck clearance to achieve .040 quesnch with the kb237 I should be at around 10.2:1 CR with the 82cc heads correct?
