I'm restoring a 68 GTX. I saw a restored 68 and it had the number 16 hand written in marker on the drivers valve cover on front of cover behind power steering pump. Today i see a restored 69 A12 Road Runner on ebay it has 23 on front of drivers cover. What is this number/marking mean?

60 views and no replies. I'll stick my foot in my mouth.

I want to say it's the last two digits of the entire engine assembly part number.
Not to be confused with the engine code as seen on the fender tag.

I'm sure someone will be along shortly to correct if necessary.

I can't afford this. mark

I am interested as well. I have an original 70 440HP motor. It has a number on each valve cover in front. However, they are not the same #. Was this an inspection #?

It's a dry heat
engine assembly codes, same as found on the buildsheet - one desiginates options( such as with or without A/C or 6 pack versus 4 barrel as an example) and the other is trans combinations

I've also heard that it was the number of that years motors "twentythird" 440 6pak. I saw it on a HEMI and was told that, but everyone elses reasons make sence too.

So what would be correct for a 68 with 440 4 barrel? No build sheet with car. The 68 i saw had 16 on one cover nothing on the other cover

Were these markings only applied to 440, 440-6 & Hemis? Don't think I have ever seen them on anything else.

I had a 40k mile 69 318 Cuda and the #'s were marked on the covers.

Wish I still had the pics.

One side was trans code, the other engine/carb combo I think.

This is some reference pics of a 5k mile 69.5 superbee 440-6.

The passenger's side numbers on this A12 are the last three digits of the engine part number for a 440 - 6bbl -2946950 with an automatic transmission.

2946949 in the engine part number for a 440 - 6bbl engine for a manual transmission.

I've seen a lot of "5" and "0" on the driver's side front of A12-440 valve covers; does that maybe mean the 95 or 9 0 are gone from another 950 or are those inspector's marks???

Trying to find out what numbers belong on my 68. 440 4 barrel auto trans. I've seen unrestored 69's with the 3 digit number on the top of valve cover passenger's side. I beleive on 69 it was the 3 digit engine code found at top left of fender tag. But 68's don't have that code on the tag.

My 68 has either a line and 62 or 162 on the right front valve cover 62 is my engine code. This is a late St. Louis built car. You can kinda see it in this pic.
